Well no, not really. Given that she was first married ten years ago and has a two year old kid I think news has had time to travel in the interim.

Whatever you think of her music she is the closest thing the music industry has to another Ian Mackaye - she sells a shit load of records on her own label, does so in an ethical manner, uses that power to support other artists, is politically active and has always refused to sign with a major despite the major financial incentives being dangled in front of her etc. So I don't get the Alanis comparison at all. Whether you like the music or not you are comparing an artist of genuine substance with someone who got real big real fast parlaying a middle aged man's idea of feminism to be mass marketed to surburban America as "edgy" art. Artistically it's as chalk n cheese as David Coverdale and Ian Curtis, unless it is Ani DiFranco's old school Socialist politics and the Adbusters mien of her fans that really bother you in which case rave on John Donne, rave on.

Hang on a moment, I thought she had sold Righteous Babe records some time ago, and had also signed up to the RIAA. Or am I misinformed ?

They would love to have her and Mackaye on board. Would be the ultimate seal of approval. Will never happen though.

Well no, actually I do like that DiFranco has supported the arts in Buffalo and has been a consistently independent artist and stuff. It's just I was never into her style of music. And I just couldn't stand all the people that she'd draw on the local coffeehouse circuit -- it just wasn't my thing.

I'm no fan of 'straight-edge' Ian McKaye either. I think that the movement he started is full of hypocrites and people who take themselves too seriously. (I kept hearing stories of so-called 'straight-edge' people around town snorting coke or smoking crack...)

Oh and I'm not against Adbusters or left politics, if that's what you were thinking...

What if.......?

Remember when Yoko used to get inside her black bag, and just sort of be in that bag and practicing 'Bagism' at John's feet?
What if........You got YoKo, Alanis, and Ani all in the same bag?
And recorded the ensuing yowling and screetching?
And had a backing band of Julian and Sean Lennon, Jacob Dylan, and Jason Bonham........called the 'Sons of Famous Guys'......

Would that be Avant Garde'......or utter Shite?

Fair enough Lawrence you pays yer money etc but why then is she the "only thing worse" than Alanis Morrisette?

All scenes are full of hypocrites and so you have to judge people by their actions. I think both ADF and Mackaye have walked the proverbial walk and yet there is nothing that alternative rock culture as a whole seems to hate more than someone with a demonstrable work ethic. God forbid eh? It's the one major thing that bugs me about rock n roll fans - the way that "we" seem to prefer our heroes indolent, tragic and broken in some way.
