I played Beatsongs the other day too, first time for more than 10 years.

Also put some Julian Cope on, first time ive done that since seeing him live @ Glastonbury in 2003. What a fucking awful performance that was (put me off for six years).

And..

BOC - Music has the right...

The Smiths - Meat is Murder

Movietone - Movietone

Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings - Naturally

Menahan Street Band - Make the Road by Walking...

The Sea and Cake - The Sea and Cake

Nadja - Radiance of Shadows.
As reviewed by Mr Cope:
http://www.headheritage.co.uk/unsung/albumofthemonth/1939
Blimmin love this. It works as background at low volume, but is wonderfully heavy at high volume. Nothing has come close to this in my listening this week.

Isis - Wavering Radiant
I was really looking forward to hearing this, but it has definitely taken second place to Nadja. It is a bit disappointing so far, although I aim to give it more listens. The bulk of the album seems to follow very much in the standard Isis template - I kind of expected more, and at least some semblance of progression. The last two tracks, on the other hand, do at least seem to break the Isis formula a bit - there is a touch of more trad rock and even prog about them which adds a new dimension to the Isis sound.

Cope - Unruly Imagination
Now I've got it on me iPod I'm giving it a thorough listen again. Definitely one of his best for some time IMO.

Gratful Dead - Working Man's Dead, Live Dead, Greyfolded, Aoxomoxoa, Europe '72
These accompanied my reading of Dark Star (an oral biography of Jerry Garcia) by Robert Greenfield. Not a fantastic book, as it is all quotes (many of which I was familiar with from other books), but I am interested in their early years, and the connections with the Pranksters etc. The albums sound great in the sunny weather too.

The Upsetter CD Box Set
Speaking of music for hot weather :-)

Hail! \m/

Pink Fairies - Never Never Land

Ozric Tentacles - The Yum Yum Tree. Unlikely to win new converts but it does seem a bit more varied texturally than earlier albums. I like it a lot!

Astra - The Weirding! Totally great new/old prog excess! Buy or die!

Julian Cope - The Unruly Imagination. Splendid!

Abhorrence - Evoking The Ambomination. Unholy death-din of horribleness. V good!

Underworld - Dubnobasswithmyheadman. Not played for ages. Utterly wonderful!

Slade - Wall of Hits. Bostin'!

Uriah Heep - Wake The Sleeper. Great!

Christoph Merki- 20 000 Leagues Under The Sea. Nice ambi-jazz noodlings.

Lunar Dunes - From Above. Great stuff with top rhythm section (although they have still failed to adopt my suggested strategies of flaming cod-pieces, apocalyptic pyro and rocket-firing guitars. Bah!)

King Crimson - In The Court of the Crimson King / Larks Tongue in Aspic. Great!

Led Zeppelin - S/T. uh oh, I can feel a whole lotta Zep in the Catpod in the near future.

Magnum - On A Storytellers Night

James Hardway - Moors & Christians

Iggy & The Stooges - Raw Power

Stanley Jordan, Victor Wooton, Mark Millar - Thunder. 3 bass heavy funk fusion madness. Some of it makes me laff out loud in a good way.

System 7 - Seventh Wave. Gearing up for Glasto.

plus some more old tech trance n bits n bobs mixmag, wax etc discs

Have a nice week Good Vibrators.

LP’S
MOON SAFARI – Air
SING ‘OTHER PEOPLE’ – Angels Of Light
LIVE MELBOURNE 2009 – Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds

THE SINGLES – The Clash
Great to have all these tracks together. It was good to hear them again, even the weaker ones like Tommy Gun. Apart from Train In Vain – I know it’s got its supporters, but its lazy arsed white boy funk is waaay out of its depth here to my ears, whereas the under-rated Know Your Rights with it public service announcement – with guitars! - has one of THE great opening lines.

MADE TO LOVE MAGIC – Nick Drake
SLATES – The Fall
YOUR ARSENAL - Morrissey
COMMERCIAL ZONE – PIL

STRANDED – Roxy Music
As much as I love Roxy music, I don’t think Stranded is as good as some folk make out. Still, when it’s good, it’s brilliant. Mother Of Pearl and A Song For Europe are obvious hilites, but it’s the opening Street Life that really lit up my life this week. Surely that has to be one of the greatest intro’s ever!

MONOLITHS & DIMENSIONS – Sunn O)))
KNOWLE WEST BOY – Tricky
JOY 1967-70 – Ultra Vivid Scene

DISCO BUMPERS – V/A
El cheapo MFP LP that was obviously released as a cash-in on the ‘Bump’ phenomenon, justified by including two tracks that feature the word in their titles. Elsewhere there’s a couple of big hits c/o George McCrae and KC & the Sunshine Band, a few obscure disco tracks and, for some reason, the already quite ancient Baby Come Back by The Equals. Thankfully, Kenny are nowhere to be seen!

45’S by The Liars, Higamos Hogamos, Morrissey, JAMC, Phats & Small, Photek, Ultra Nate, XTC and John Kongos.

DVD - Sparks, Holy Fuck and The Fall.

And been playing the Lust For Life-like Dance Like A Monkey by the Dolls a few times.

Jellyfish - Fan Club box Disc 2
Live all sorts from the first album touring and promo.

Peter Hammill - Roaring Forties
He does and they do.

Beastie Boys - In Sounds From Way Out
Curio compilation of BB instrumentals. Medeski Martin Wood lite but good with it. Speaking of which ....

Medeski Martin Wood - Radiolarians 1 & 2
Jazz hops out of the museum for a quick boogie into the 21st century. Some method. Much madness.

Human League - Crash
Almost as compelling as "Music From The Elder" but nowhere near as good as "Change of Heart".

Placebo - Battle For The Sun
Their best in a long while. Knocks spots off any other angsty, disco flavoured, string drenched, arena rock I've seen close the Jonathan Ross show recently. And there are proper choruses. Which helps. Praise be. Maybe we need a new genre because if Michael Parkinson has his Parky Jazz then JR should have his Ross Rock.
