They were either influenced by the Germans or NYCers (Silver Apples/Suicide). Some were trying for a clinical coldness, others were trying for warmth. They had an opening, the public's ear was receptive, to the new sounds and looks ushered in by punk/postpunk. Oh I can tell the difference. OMD were just good pop almost in a 60s sense. Erasure and Yaz/oo were more for the gay disco crowd. Eyeless In Gaza -- experimental. Ultravox more like the better side of late-prog. And I dunno what Numan was -- maybe an attempt to be Bowie... Forgot to mention Depeche Mode, who were more like a rock band with synths if anything -- maybe just in appearance though (all that leather...)

Updated it to CD version only recently after spotting it on Amazon for about 3 quid..bargain ! I bought that album back in the 80's too and love it, although the record is getting a bit tired now. I was wondering what the extra tracks (remixes?) are like on the CD version?

I remember the NME reviewing Pandora's Box and describing OMD as the missing link between Brian Eno and Hazel Dean.

Seriously though, are medleys EVER a good idea? (cue this cocaine-fuelled 10-second-attention-span folly again...) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_z9b0GFRz9g

.....it's strange, that out of ALL the clips there are to choose from, that keytechwankfest always seems to be drummed up from Clarky HQ! :-] You got the triple album haven't you?!

I dunno, the guy with the jumper draped over his shoulders playing the hideously/hilariously out of tune synth is giving him a run for his money.

I liked the first three singles, especially 'Red Frame/White Light'....... ....but then I saw McClusky do that dance...I ran away, never for my ears to return! Well, except to watch that OGWT clip at Clarky's gaff years later and proceed to split our sides as well as being horrified (see said clip elsewhere on thread) ;-)
