Yes and no and yes again!
That's why I didn't include it, I think.
I love them boys but I find this really hard to get into.
I want to like it more than I do.
Their stuff usually is awkward, but there's always some sort of handle to grip onto, and then off ye go.
Anyways, it seems none of the lists here will ever be as boring as some of the others batting about.

Is it just me, but some of the so called "prog" stuff like Spocks Beard and Dream Theatre, i just don't get at all.

Awful stuff!

I know exactly what you mean. But their fans might argue that their music is truly progressive, while bands like Diagonal.... aren't. Which is probably true. But who gives a shit.

I think the crux of the matter is that Americans don't do prog. Happy to discuss.

Actually I reckon it's their warmest and most organic-sounding record yet. Certainly waaay more accessible than their last two. Their best since Confield, I reckon. There's even some blinking improvisation on it, which seems a very un-Autechre thing to be doing. Stylistically it's all over the place, a real hodge podge of different sounds (and eras). And I bet that's the first time anyone's ever used 'hodge podge' with regard to Autechre.

Erm... some of these are not necessarily albums that came out this year but ones I got and subsequently played a lot this year if thou seest...

In no particular order of splenditude -

Julian Cope - Black Sheep (some of you might have this too)

Blood Ceremony - S/T. Jethro Sabbath meets Black Tull and it's great.

Benga - Diary of An Afro Warrior. Really got into this recently purchased dubstep epic album. Heavy beats and bowel troubling bass mix with acid minimalism.

Serpent Cult - The Weight of Light. Female fronted heavy-as-fuck doom. Nice!

Whitesnake - Good to be Bad. Amazingly, David Coverdale and crew made a fantastic rock album in 2008. Blimey!

Robyn - Robyn. Just the most brilliantly sassy, 'tude heavy pop album ever.

Wayne Shorter - JuJu. Exemplary back-in-the-day jazzment!

Opeth - Watershed. Much loved in the Catpod death/prog/metal titans always deliver.

Ansur - The Warring Factions. Norweigian prog-metallers take a quantum leap with album 2.

Pop Levi - Never Never Love. Levi channels glam, Prince, rock and electro influences into great pop album.

Holy Fuck - Holy Fuck. Holy Fuck!!

Goldfrapp - 7th Tree. Pastoral Kate Bushular tunes abound.

Martriden - The Unsettling Dark. Excellent US black/prog metal album.

Herbie Hancock - Inventions & Dimensions. Percussive early album from the uberdude.

KISS - Alive 35. Excellent thru-the-soundesk document of Keith's fave band on their 2008 Euro Tour. You can feel the heat of the flashbombs go off.

That's all I can remember of the top off me noggin. Heard some great stuff this year and lond may it continue.

HAIL \m/ !!

Not bought much this year to be honest. It seems when I'm doing visual work/animation I don't go out looking for much new music. However, these have stood out.

Coil - The New Backwards. The rest of the ape, but it was only released this year.

Aleph-1 - Aleph-1. Its an Alva Noto album really.

Marihiko Hara - Reflexxion, und dann, Metamorphose.

Con Cetta - Sclerosis.

Mother - Self Deprivation.

Sound Canvas Volume 1 - Its a compilation album.

Platform - Templates. Silly stuff really but rewarding.

Skyphone - Avellanda. cos I'm a big softy bastard occasionally.

The Black Angels - Directions to see a ghost.

NeuBau - Definitions of Nowhere.

The Fall - Imperial Wax Solvent.
