Who are these people?

And which ones are the boys and which ones are the girls?

That'd be all well and good if the music was any cop. And sorry, Moonie, I can find nothing remotely heroic about a bloke wearing spandex - whether he comes from Yorkshire or the Planet Zog!

Radiohead always sounded too much like U2 to me.

Baby I don't care

generally the girls are the ones with the least make-up

I was at an Ozzy concert in Newcastle about 1982-3,sitting in the bar with 2 big Geordie lads who were discussing boots eye make up whilst painting their fingernails, they considered themselves to be at the very cutting edge of the rock brigade, the good old days, I really don't miss them at all.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that I genuinely believe there isssomething far more enobling and heroic in Joe Elliot from Def Leppard spending his day at a factory in sheffield, full of rock dreams and buying spandex keks from Ms Selfridge to wear with the band onstage than Sid stenciling a swastika on his jacket whilst working out which way up to hold his bass.

Nice. Nice.

I think it is important for us all to recognise that, irrespective of what one thinks of someone's music, the desire to strive towards something better and the absolute commitment to make it happen is a rare and special thing. Whether you are Sun Ra, Mark E Smith, Moz Def or Ronnie James Dio.

Unfashionable as it might be I have a lot of time for people who absolutely commit to a vision and are prepared to work their proverbials off to get there.

Sid it seems was something of a death worshipper. Even if he had been able to play like Jannick Top he would still have been that.

Joe Elliott was a dreamer with a vision. Might not be yours or my vision for our lives but what heart! What balls! Fish of Marillion was the same story. Will to power. In spandex. Amen.

I thought they sounded like U2 on early records like Creep, but I don't think that comparison has been relevant in a long, long time.

In many ways they are the complete antithesis of U2 as a band these days, in that having become mega they decided to do their own thing whatever that may be, however 'difficult' that may be, rather than embrace the hugeness of it all.

(And I'm not someone who hates U2. Not a massive fan, but I do think they've made some good single in their time)

I see what you mean.

I think U2 tried to do that too with Passengers and Zooropa and Million Dollar Hotel etc and on the edgier bits of Achtung Baby (which is for me the most exciting mainstream record of the first half of the 90s along with Peggy). Inevitably the siren call of major money was going to bring them back to making grand(iose) gestures on records to the back row of theoretical arenas. Also Bono's politcal platform kind of demands that kind of exposure.

Don't be surprised if at some point Radiohead want to feel the love of faceless thousands for a year or two and bank the really big bucks. Wont be for a while but when they all hit 45 I betcha they'll be recording big sounding acerbic indie rock numbers with middle 8s and choruses and playing every stadium going. Which is fair enough.

They'll probably do a Peter Gabriel and use the money to build their own eco-town or something. I tend to think that if you can get your hands on big wads of cash and do some good with it then that's fair enough.

The thing that makes me laugh is that, but for a twist of radioplay fate in somewhere as off the rock and roll radar as Israel, Radiohead could be Revolver or Bark Psychosis or vice versa.

The devil is in the details that are often out of our control so I say play-stadia-feel-the-love-be-happy. Which might explain why I think Van Halen are a fine thing.
