Jim Tones wrote: Re: The Velvets rant... "...It's muddy, the volume comes and goes, the guitars are all out of tune, as is the viola." That's what is so brilliant about the album, the way the sound matches the themes of each track A major landmark to punch 'musical snobbery' in the face! Great record but it also serves as an open door for every semi-talented musical ignoramus on the block to make their own 'statement'. Half the music that came out of the UK in the mid 80s laboured under the misconception that borrowing the Velvets' sonic palette could act as a cloak for their half-baked witterings. The album (like the first Ramones record) is so very influential partly because it allowed a lot of bad acts with nothing original to say to thrive under the cover of darkness and a floppy fringe. As Cope points out in his BBC KRock thing (talking about Amon Duul I rather than the Velevts) it's fairly easy to make records that sound like that. Doing it first though and in the face of indifference and even hostility is where the true poison lies.

'Great record but it also serves as an open door for every semi-talented musical ignoramus on the block to make their own 'statement'.' ..that's why a lot of people believe it was one of the first punk albums. The Sex Pistols produced a wave of sid the snot shenanigans. Velvets - no messing, three chord rocknroll with an attitude. Lou reed still produces it....not sure whether that's because he hasn't progressed musically or whether he's not arsed....does alright out of it though - 40 quid for a manchester ticket next month. 8)

That was the cliche that sent Lydon rushing to PIL and The Clash into the arms of Americana, Reggae and the early Rap scene. After The Ramones, Damned Damned Damned and The Clash there is nothing much left to say worth hearing in the three chord style. Punk as we know it now is as conservative as R&B and pub rock. At the time the whole point was to be original and make some noise despite ones technical limitations not steal someone else's sound because it was easy to duplicate. People also forget that the Velevts could actually really play and that Lou was skilled as a Carole King style song-churner-by-the-yard writer. It is much much cooler when you choose to play that way when you have a whole range of choices than because it is the only choice you have.

Pet Sounds is not flawless but it's way better than Sgt. Pep's. Look it's like this: Brian Wilson reached heights that the Beatles were never able to attain collectively. However, The Beatles were far more consistent. It's like Brian could be on a 6, 7 or an 8 on a scale of 1-10 and then jump up into the 10+ area whereas The Beatles were consistently on a 7 or 8 but never reaching the 10. Got me?

How about Sisters Of Mercy's Floodland? Now that's an overrated album if there ever was one. Overproduced by a classic producer who usually knows better (Glyn Johns) with shrill background vocals. And the music is the crappiest goth self-parody ever.
