spooky...
Jan 31, 2005, 22:35
When it was getting towards the end of recording Jehovahkill, Island had pretty much given up on him and pulled funding, so they were working in the studio underneath the Island offices to save money. Trying to make music directly below the people who are strangling your career!

Anyway, one time there was a loud constant feedback wail tone coming out of the studio speakers. Nobody could figure where it was coming from. It was so loud that the doorman guy, one of the old geezers who came over from Jamaica with Chris Blackwell when Island started, came legging in to ask what it was.

Julian and crew showed him - they'd switched everything off, pulled the plugs, yet still the noise went on.

Kind of fitting for such an occult album.

I believe some of the wierd noises that appear between tracks on Jehovahkill originated in similar circumstances...

Very fitting, thanks Merrick.

I cant understand how they (island) listened to the roughs of Jehovahkill and decided that they should pull the plug in him. I mean Peggy did alright compared to Nation didnt it? And Jehovahkill takes the Peggy trip one step further and does it better. Surely they could have seen they were onto something - twats.
Its a pity though, always felt he was much more cohesive on island, compared to echo anyway. Still, Jehovahkill will eventually be remembered as one of the great lost albums. Years down the line, someone will find it and go, "yeah, this guy was into something here..."

Island life

Island at the time was all over the place. Julian says one Island bigwig said 'why are we reissuing Sandy Denny stuff when nobody really knows who he is?'.

I think having Jehovahkill buried whilst the same label was busy pushing Rattle & Hum (they even did R&H carrir bags!) is responsible for a lot of Julian's former animosity towards U2.

And you cant blame him for that at all. Its a pretty well known fact that even U2 are acutely embarrassed by Rattle and Hum.

Still without the Island fiasco happening, we may never have had HH in all its finery. Imagine life without forums like this one.....!

Must've been something other than 'Rattle and Hum', that was released in 1988, I thiink......

"Rattle & Hum (they even did R&H carrir bags!)"

I had a Rattle & Hum carrier bag!! Don't own the album mind.. got the carrier when I brought some stuff in a charity shop!! :o) Not sure if it was worth anything so I used it to scoop some cat poo out the litter tray!! :o)

Absolutely boring and non-interesting story of the day!!!
