So you could have a melody in 3/4 time and another in 4/4 time. Four bars of the 3/4 would fit in 3 bars of the 4/4 . So the only time the bars of the two different time signatures would start and end in the same place will be after 3 bars of 4/4 or on the otherhand 4 bars of 3/4.

It can be a really good sound and gives stuff an almost out of sync sound though the tempo is the same and the patterns do sometimes start and end in the same place. I think acts like Autechre used it a lot for hard to define abstract rhythms. Also if I remember rightly they used to use Notator for the old Atari ST which lent itself to layering loops of different time signatures much better than Cubase (where you would have to cut and copy the different blocks around on the editor so you would have a start and end point to cycle - where as Notator could automatically cycle stuff until it fitted).
