Elvis Costello did a version of "Psycho" I think. Wish I could find that version and the original...

As I said "Talk Talk" is my theme song, if anyone hasn't already figured it out. And I always crank up "96 Tears" whenever they play it on the oldies station!

Sick country nuggets

Apparently Eddie Noack was a specialist in country songs about insane murderers. Though "Psycho" is the only tune of his I've heard.

A couple more in the same vein, also on the Wavy Gravy set:

"Rubber Room" by Porter Wagoner (!)

"The California Hippy Murders" by Red River Dave -- the country ballad version of the Manson story.

Good stuff Maynard!

Would like to look for all the stuff you've mentioned -- and I'm not even a big fan of country!

I have had the pleasure of seeing ? and the Mysterians in concert TWICE, they regrouped and have been doing stuff since c. 1994.

Their shows always start with the band on stage vamping like a MF, then ? makes his dramatic entrance from the back of the room, shimmying up to the stage in some sort of bare-chested ensemble -- the first time I saw him it was a silver lame (lam-ay) bodysuit open to the crotch! (And remember this dude is over 50 years old!)

? on stage is a lot like Prince, only he sweats like McJagger. The band is funky and tight and slammin, and there is a definite mariachi-oompa vibe to their sound (seems more noticable in concert than on record -- they're all Mexicanos from the Detroit area, except for the farfisa player who is a greyhaired anglo hippy -- I think he's the only non-original band member.)

I'm sure this description doesn't do it justice, but the point is -- never miss an opportunity to see them if they come your way!! You will be amazed!

(And I hear they've toured Europe quite a bit.)

Those Wavy Gravy comps are must-haves, *IF* you can find them (good luck.)

I think they're quasi-bootlegs.

The label is "BEWARE" records*, serial numbers are 001 (volume 1) and 002 (volume 2). Never heard of anything else on that "label."

The covers black & white 50's stock pics -- vol1 is a blonde and a monster from some 50's SF flick, vol2 is a brunette with a poodle.

* the full label name is actually "BEWARE scientific evidence proves that plants can read our minds" Dig that!

Hmmm, would probably make excellent Unsung review material . . . . problem is they're so mysterious it's hard to give any "facts" about them. (Also vol2 has the tracks listing screwed up, I don't even know who did half the tunes.)

"Psychotic Reaction" is MY theme song . . . shame on y'all for taking this long to mention it!!!

In fact I have the world's only "The Count Five" T-shirt!!! (homemade silkscreen)

"Merry-Go-Round" and "They're Gonna Get You" are two more great Count 5 nuggets.

Discussion question:

There is a line in the second verse of "Psych Re" I could never figure out -- sounds like "yow lil girl with the lettuce in the rain now."

Anyone know?
