Can't agree more with Orwell.

Also, in a similar satirical, forward-thinkin' humanistic vibe is Kurt Vonnegut - only 'discovered him a few years ago and now gradually reading my way thru his entire output. Not come across a duffer yet - obviously the famous Slaughterhouse 5 and Breakfast of Champions are great but others I love are Cat's Cradle, Sirens of Titan, Galapagos and Hocus Pocus. A real DOOD!

Arundhati Roy's God of Small Things is brilliant, also her realhead 'political' writings just put out last year as "The Algebra of Infinite Justice". Musings and attacks on the War against terrorism, corruption and globalisation, IMF & World Bank Dams.... She gets accused of being too emotive, but with issues as important as these ARE emotive - You gotta take sides! Brilliant writing!

Can also recommend Gustav Meyrink - mysterious, mystical slightly occulty wierdness, esp. "The Golem"
