J.G. Ballard's a good writer if you enjoy social comment thinly veiled as fiction. I just finished reading his complete short stories, and "The Ultimate City" and "Chronopolis" in particular got my mind racing. It can get a bit repetetive over 1000+ pages. As far as his recent novels go "Cocaine Nights" takes a look at the so-called "leisure society" of cheesy retirement flats that we seem to be demographically moving toward in Europe, and "Super Cannes" takes a nicely jaundiced view of gated communities and hi tech business.
btw Australian customs became convinced I was a coke smuggler after finding a copy of the former novel in my luggage though (and having a copy of "Notes of a Dirty Old Man" by Bukowski in there probably didn't do me any favours either, they probably thought that was my diary). Luckily their interest waned before they got the rubber gloves out...
