Mary Wolstencraft wrote Vindication of the Rights of Women (and her daughter wrote Frankenstein)
Sidney and Beatrice Webb were social reformers and socialists.
Mrs Gaskell (Elizabeth Gaskell) wrote novels such as Mary Barton which do for women characters what Dickens did for men. ie poor, working class women struggling but without the Catherine Cookson it will all end happy sentimentality.

Also try Germaine Greer - the Female Enuch and The Mad Women's Underclothes
And look into the lives of the women who founded the Salvation Army...
