Actually, thinking about this and coming back to the essence of your original post, there's always George Bernard Shaw. Not the plays (which are excellent). The Unsocial Socialist - if you can find it - has good take on gender politics, and is hilarious. There's also a good (non-fiction) book ripping the political hijacking of Wagner to pieces, but I can't remember what the hell it's called.
