I was in trouble a lot during my last years at school for a variety of reasons (most of the time for a lot worse things than sipping fizzy drink and using the wrong door). So in that age-old conflict between teacher and school kid, my sympathies will always tend to be with the kid, all other things being equal.

And yes, whilst detention for a trivial transgression can be seen as "false imprisonment" in a very real sense; and whilst it can - at times - be abused by teachers; i find myself shying away from the idea of pupils sueing their schools over it.

I don't have any coherent reasoning, and i know i'm naive in my hope that society can be self-correcting and self-governing without the constant need for litigation; but i'm just not sure legal action over detention is the right way for society to be going.
