I'm certainly not arguing that beauty pageants are "a good thing" - and to greasemonkey's point; i suspect, with rare exceptions, that the "beauty queens" are the exploited ones. I'm not going to organise pro-Miss World demos or anything (as i say, i've never watched one - i usually never even notice when the thing is on... only the fact that it's been in the "proper news" because of the riots has brought it to my attention).

I just believe (genuinely, passionately and not "just to make a point") that billboards featuring half-naked women covered in beer froth are 1,000 times more worthy of direct action, protests, and feminist criticism. I see protests at Miss World as genuinely mystifying for that reason.

So, to repeat - i ain't saying it's good, or harmless, or unworthy of criticism. I'm just saying that Miss World lags way behind many things, that most people calmly accept as "normal", in the "demeaning women" stakes.
