I share your views on consumerist propaganda being genuinely violent. I still see beauty pageants as being demeaning as they do their bit in objectifing people, and create false unobtainable 'ideals' for the vast majority.
I read recently that 98% of women are unhappy with their bodys, whichs is a sad state of affairs -especially as most men are more than happy with 98% of them. Anorexia for example has root causes in our societys attitudes, and admittedly it is far more widespread and inherent than just pageants.

Did you see the Miss Captivity contest in Lithuanian prisons ? I can't laugh that off.
