i don't have a huge objection to Miss World (or beauty pageants in general) - though, in all honestly, i have never watched one. I hear all the arguments against them, but frankly believe that the advertising industry and most pop videos debase women far more than beauty pageants.

I don't really want to get into a big discussion on the issue (as i know most folks here don't see the effects of the media - and advertising in particular - to be anywhere near as bad as i view them), but i figure Miss World should be placed in the cultural context of consumerism - when absolutely everything has already been commodified (from the streets we live in, to the trains we ride in, to the police cars - soon! - on our streets, to our very bodies; male and female) then i don't know if it's possible to debase anything any further.

The female body is already used to sell everything from cars to beer... to a billion other pointless consumer products. How is it possible to respect it any less. How can something that we already accept as a legitimate method of selling addictive drugs be debased by parading in a swim-suit and being ogled at for it's own sake; rather than the sake of a subliminal 'buy me' message?

But as i say - i'm one of those sad people who views consumerist propaganda as genuinely violent. I guess Miss World might seem pretty offensive if you don't share that view.
