Having been someone who's lived thru every ugly permutation of alcohol consumption, both on a level of observing it in others and in myself, I cannot agree with your basic premise more. And damn, Shelbs, I am proud of you, man, for kicking it. But the elephant in the room is how prohibition creates criminality. The hunger for a fix, whatever the substance, feeds into horrific violence as ruthless people discover that they can make fortunes supplying others with what they crave. Columbia and Mexico and Afghanistan are all overrun with murderers that have exploited drug users in the west's appetites. What makes this dilemma possible is the illegality of their respective exports. The best course of action, as far as I can see it, is to keep the profit motive low on drugs and alcohol by keeping them legal but heavily regulated. Fight them on a public health front. We already have a good model of this in the form of tobacco cessation... the rate of smoking has been drastically cut in the west thru taxation, restrictions on use, and steady public education.

The vast majority of social drinkers are neither able nor willing to give up, and as for long-term alcoholics are concerned, where would they be? Dead from an alternative and equally desctructive source such as as heroin or benzos probably. Substituting heroin or coke for booze is fairly common in AA clients and vice versa, from what I've been told by folks who work with recovering alkies. For me the urge to get wasted from time to time is as fundamental the urge to have sex or eat. The unpalatable truth is - life is monotonous and dull for most people without at least the occasional escape valve of a few drinks or a spliff, so if people are going to be effectively weaned off those things the the NHS has to provide folks with a viable alternative. Moreover, I drink at least the recommended 28 units per week and I'm still reliable. Minus the booze and hash still be reliable, but also terminally bored.

I too Shelby have been totally sober for 9 months and it feels great! Its just nice to step out of the box and have a clear head for the first time in over 20 years. Ive stopped ALL intoxications by the way. Im not saying that I wont ever have a drink or a spliff ever again but, certainly at this point in my life, I wanna be straight!!

I am completely the opposite in that alcohol has only ever been positive for me. I use it for a bit of hedonismm that's all. Ban 'hedonism'? No way!But if it were the case that it was somehow determental for me I wouldn't use that as a reason to think everyone lese should join my way of how I fee about the stuff. It's as unfair as saying I love me booze, sod everyone else. I'd never do that. I am really (or maybe not really) surprised that alcohol gets a fair old battering here but 'drugs' don't. They cause their fair share of social and health problems too. It's all about the individual innit? x

I think it's because on a drug usage/harm to others comparison, alcohol is way out in front.

Yes, but many, many more people take alcohol than take drugs, or even combinations of. x

Which is why it causes as much damage as it does and why it gets a battering on here that other drugs don't. I appreciate that that you enjoy it and can handle it, but it is a vile drug when misused. That said, I am of the opinion that it would impossible to get rid of. It's a major part of the history and heritage of these islands.

Tell the mum/dad of the son who dies in a gutter through a heroin overdose we shouldn't be 'as concerned' coz the numbers are lower than those whoe end up there through booze. Remember, much of the drinking population are sort of 'over the age' of being interested in taking drugs anyway, or they just don't choose to. I've certainly grown out of it. We should get rid of the 'stupid' drinking culture that's popped up over the past twenty years or so. I've mentioned earlier where I think the problems lie. Some people succumb to the chocolate cake and die but even more will eat it as a little indulgence. For the same reason it'd be terribly unfair to ban the cholocolate cake methinks:-) x
