Hob wrote: They are to be released i hope that's true. According to the Sea Shepherd blog at 05.00 GMT, there are a number of false reports, saying that they've been released, ofr that Sea Shepherd's ship won't accept calls to organise their return http://www.seashepherd.org/news/media_080116_3.html the whalers have said they'll return the hostages if Sea Shepherd agree not to interfere with whaling! http://www.seashepherd.org/news/media_080116_2.html Given that the whaling was illegal, that'd be tantamount to allowing a crime to be committed. Even if we weren't dealing with the brave and brilliant people at Sea Shepherd, who have a long and proud history of obstructing whaling wherever it occurs. Whilst the ordeal must be terrifying for the two men, the incident has has its upsides. It's drawn attention to the whaling happening, and the fact that it's happening illegally (the Sea Shepherd people just wanted to hand over a letter explaining the legalities of the issues so the whalers couldn't feign ignorance). Anyone who thinks these guys are great and want whaling to continue to be directly challenged, please donate to Sea Shepherd. https://dnbweb1.blackbaud.com/OPXDONATE/AddDonor.asp?cguid=0C37A289%2D1993%2D4A9B%2DAFD8%2D89B179E538C1&sTarget=https%3A%2F%2Fdnbweb1%2Eblackbaud%2Ecom%2FOPXDONATE%2FDonate%2Easp%3Fcguid%3D0C37A289%252D1993%252D4A9B%252DAFD8%252D89B179E538C1&sid=D441ABC0%2DE82B%2D4601%2D8803%2D2A01576F6838

Hob wrote: They are to be released Not so fast, Hob! "Although Foreign Minister Stephen Smith said he had reached an agreement with the Japanese Government that the two men be released, the ships' captains ignored the order." http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,25197,23064648-2702,00.html Until there is credible confirmation in the News section on the Sea Shepherd site, we should regard the men as still captive. Which means anyone supporting their stance should be contacting those with the power to make things move. Japanese Embassy in London: [email protected], or call them on 020 7465 6500. UK government's Foreign and Commonwealth Office: It would be good to copy them in to whatever you send to the Japanese embassy. But also email them directly and get them to pull their fingers out. Meg Munn is the Minister "responsible" for Asia and the Pacific so mark it for her attention: [email protected] or call on 020 7008 1500. Giles Lane was acting peacefully to uphold international conservation law and the laws of Australia against poachers. He has been assaulted and kidnapped. The whaling ship has no right to demand conditions for his release. He is a UK citizen, so the UK government is duty bound to act in his defence. What are they doing about it?

Nice one with the contact details there. Looks like they're still aboard: http://news.smh.com.au/activists-must-be-freed-gillard/20080117-1mfc.html Also encouraging that the Aussie govt are not willing to discuss anything other than unconditional release.

The footage shown on CNN clearly shows both men tied to railings, and there's a photo of them later tied up elsewhere (apparently to a GPS mast) outdoors on the deck http://edition.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/asiapcf/01/17/activists.ship/#cnnSTCVideo

And what is the 'scientific research' for? To ascertain the viability of commercial whaling! So this 'it's just for science thing, it's not commercial whaling' is utter fucking horseshit.

And of course not a single paper (as is the norm in scientific research I assume) or thesis or even cack handed essay to be found on the matter. x
