At the beginning of 2005CE, vestiges of America’s belief in ‘Manifest Destiny’ are still evident in its government’s perception of the rest of the world, the ‘Outlands’ if you will. From the dismissive ‘muddy creek’ comments of American marines’ encounters with Iraq’s legendary river Euphrates, evidence is clear that many modern Americans have ‘little connection with the past history of any of them, and still less with all antiquity’, as John L. Sullivan wrote over 150 years ago. But far more chilling is the fact that Sullivan’s self-righteous words written so long ago still – for many of we Europeans and Brits at least – sum up modern American foreign policy:

‘We have no interest in the scenes of antiquity, only as lessons of avoidance of nearly all their examples. The expansive future is our arena, and for our history. We are entering on its untrodden space, with the truths of God in our minds, beneficent objects in our hearts, and with a clear conscience unsullied by the past. We are the nation of human progress, and who will, what can, set limits to our onward march? Providence is with us, and no earthly power can.’

Nuff Said, brothers and sisters. Welcome to the New World, I guess.

But whereas Colin Powell felt the need to pat his fellow Americans on the back when he referred on primetime TV to his country’s generous deliveries of aid to the stricken peoples of Indonesia, Sri Lanka and India; the people of Britain – a country less than 1/10th the size of America – has just got on with it and collected £50 million. However physically large it is, no country with its eyes only on the future will be able to weather the storms that Mother Nature chooses arbitrarily to inflict upon us from time to time. Such is the reason we employ verbs like ‘to weather’ in the first place. Britain and Europe have been places of refuge and hope for millennia longer than the United States of America. And when America’s dispossessed gay people, Jewish people and liberal artistic communities run to Britain and Europe for sanctuary from the right wing’s New Theocracy, I’ve no doubt we shall happily make room for them all – and without too many smug smiles of self-congratulation.

To the human spirit that drives us ALL!

Julian Cope.

It's easy to be selective. Is this anti-american?

I don't think he is being fascist or racist. If you describe Europe or the USA as places of refuge for the disposessed where people are in theory all the same before the law and all entitled to privacy, self expression, free to join or start political parties and have a say in the nation's affairs - some of the people who will find refuge may not necessarily believe in the pluralistic aims of your society - there is a sense in which fundamentalist christians and muslims believe only in 'God's Law' and by their actions may put our freedoms at stake. I think Cope is right to be on the lookout for this and expressions of religious people who do not believe in our freedoms, separation of church and state, the bill of rights etc although I think that it is a fine line and people should definitely have the freedom to dissent from pluralism just not to threaten it or work against it - there are a lot of Christians/Muslims in America and Europe who would have church law as the only law - it's happening in the US with Bush's judicial appointees creating laws based on biblical justification rather than constitutional justification. You have to watch out for them and try to minimise their impact.

Woah YAIP, you're a bit over the top there. Like most others on this forum I think people should wear what they want, even if it's a Burberry cap, however you have to ask why Muslim women have to wear clothing to cover their whole body. Where did this law originate? What is the purpose of it? Fortunatelly not all Muslim women adhere to it. Is this a problem for Muslim men? I certainly beleive in people's rights to practice whatever they want, except intolerence and hatred.

I could be wrong but are less and less Muslim women waering the veil now?

Any advice/info that would further my understanding of the above would be appreciatted.

Hi Sootickle.

I have big problems with people telling other's what they can and cannot do with their own bodies/clothes. Whether Cope's statement "disputing the right to indulge in such irrational lifestyles is not Racist, but merely Creedist?" is well thought out or not:

"disputing the right to indulge in irrational lifestyles" could apply to pretty much anyone you choose not to agree with. Any woman of Islam could dispute Mr Cope's right to wear daffy duck shorts or publish pictures of his wife's breasticles in antiquarian books. So it's all hot air from Cope, unless he wants to move the step from "disputing rights" to "removing rights"

PS I'm not pro-Islam.

"My invisible sky god is greater than your invisible sky god."

"No, my invisible sky god is greater than your invisible sky god."

"No, my invisible sky god is greater than your invisible sky god."

"No, my..."

Continue until the earth is a smouldering rock, bereft of life.
