Of course valium is just a muscle relaxer, not really a barbituate... From what someone told me anyways.

The point is letting people choose their altered state of consiousness (sp?)

Your point was allowing them the choice as a method of social control. Bread & circuses.

Anyhoo, I also don't think you're right because the guys up the back of my bus in the morning smoking a joint don't look like if it was illegal they'd stop at home listening to Floyd and making daisy chains.

Ok so its not a flawless argument.
But generally I would rather the streets had more stoneheads and less pissheads on them at 12 on a Sat night.

Actually I wasn't thinking of it terms of social control. People will always seek an altered state of conciousness, I believe it is part of human nature for a considerable chunk of the human race. If people were given the legal option of imbibing in a subsatnce that generally calms them down physically, then the rest of society might find that a good deal more pleasant than if they were 'obliged' (ie the only real vaible option in legal terms) to get to an altered state through alcohol, the side effects of which much of society is having to endure.

Wasn't really suggesting you had advocated social control, was just suggesting anoth way of looking at what you'd said. To be honest, the bloke up the back of my bus in the morning is just as likeyl to be drinking buckfast in the evening on the way back from work.

I'm all for legalisation of cannabis, and I don't think this news piece need necessarily be an argument against doing so, either.

don't think the streets being full of stoners would really reduce violence. I know I for one would be running amok with a pick axe handle (ok, not really).

Let's say that it is unarguable that cannabis can trigger otherwise latent psychosis in predisposed people. It's still not a reason to ban it. It's a reason to do the research and properly imform people of the risks, and it's a reason to provide health care for the small number of unfortunate people who suffer.

Nobody can seriously claim cannabis is entirely harmless for all possible users. But the fact is that it is used responbily and safely by millions without any harm to anyone, not even themselves.

The guy saying 'it's Russian roulette' would only be accurate if the gun had one bullet and several million chambers.

A better comparison would be peanut allergy. Millions of us enjoy peanut products every day, but for a few people with undiagnosed latent allergies, peanut use is very damaging, even fatal.

So how dare the government be soft on peanuts. How dare these people who use peanuts recreationally - not one of whom truly needs the nuts - want them to be freely available and thus allow those with latent allergies to be exposed to the dire consequences. Those who call for the legalisation of Star Bars and peanut butter M&Ms are calling for peanut-allergic children to fall dead in the playground.

Actually, that's a fair point about the peanuts, Merrick.

"However, Rethink said there had been a 60% increase in people who smoked drugs and had mental health problems in the last five years. "

I think there has been a widespread increase in global tension full stop in the last 5 years hasn't there?
A certain idiot is going around claiming every body he don't like is a terrorist for one thing. He's backed up by a bunch of people who supposedly are in authority over the areas a lot of people on this list live too. Would think that was a pretty good sign that people are likely to need to kick back and have a smoke or go crazy myself.
Are these people looking at the correct factors involved?

Must be someone like Quexalcote... Oh, I found out the significance of his post-name. Seems to hath a 'Jesus Christ Pose' thang(!) "Whitey's got a God-complex!" Funny he's a 'secularist'...

I found out about Quexalcote the deity after digging up some 'anti-religious' pamphlets.
