The Archaeology of Fernworthy forest
Dec 15, 2014, 16:55
Just found this recent survey (Jul 2013) :

http://www.dartmoor-npa.gov.uk/__data/assets/pdf_file/0006/384540/FernworthyLR.pdf

Fernworthy (Froggymead) and Assycombe are among my favourite sites, that area of the moor is definitely worth investigating if you've never been.

That's a good example of how people used to live, and a lovely site too. The PDF format gave one of the clearest displays I've ever seen !

Stones seemed to have been used to provide a stable foundation for the buildings.

Fernworthy is very special. The trees seem right somehow. The whole place feels right to me. If ever I were to be convinced of 'something active' at an ancient monument, it would be there.

Have you ever noticed an Eastern facing arc there at all, by any chance ?

I couldn't see one in the pics.

Sorry if the question seems obvious, but do you mean an arc of circle stones at the east? if so then yes. There is a good plan on the pdf.

No, I meant an arc of stones, that faces East. I couldn't see one of the PDF but thought if you are familiar with the site you might have noticed one ?

The site at Fernworthy consists of the circle, stone rows, cairns & kists. I've never noticed an arc of stones.
Tbh I'm struggling to think of any site at all that has an arc of East facing stones (without it being part of a circle, obviously)

What religious or astronomical use would such a thing be?

A megalithic astronomical dish of course!
