Thanks for that. I've been around here long enough to know we can never really know how old the spiral motif is. It is interesting that the pilgrimage route is claimed to pre-Christian and having visited quite a few early Christian sites last week, including the unsung Reask Monastic Site and several clochan/beehive huts, it is easy to see the continuation as a natural one. I'll have a go at submitting the spiral stone to the Eds as a new site for Ireland.
PS: After walking up (and back down) Reenconnell Hill along part of the Pilgrim's Way, navigating bogs and mist, I felt rather well and somewhat renewed - the latter part of last year had been difficult.
