Had a lovely surprise today, my good friend in Derry sent me a little book called "- The Last Irish Druid ... and the Christianisation of Ireland's last site of Pagan sun-worship" by Chris McClintock. It looks fascinating - there are chapters about Grianan of Aileach hill fort (Grian is Gaelic for sun) and the sun roll at Crogh Patrick in Co Mayo. Mainly though, the book is about the ancient stones in the Valley of Glencolmcille in Co Donegal - these stones are covered in markings of squares and right angles now thought to relate to sun worship.
The markings on the stones indicate a particular day on which pagans paid tribute to the sun - and that day was 9th June - St Columba's Day, the day pilgrimage in his honour still takes place.

Talking of restoration ,as we are /were on another thread , the Grianan is worth a look at .

Yes, indeed Tiompan, the chapter looks fascinating though I would like to read it through a couple of times before commenting. My friend wrote in her letter "Grianan of Aileach, just 4 miles from Derry is still a place we visit in the spring of the year but until 2012 we did not realise it too was the passage of the sun at the spring equinox" - she goes on to say she is looking forward to visiting in the spring this year with a greater understanding.

It's impressive as I'm sure it was when fist built , but .

Thanks for link Tiompan, a revelation to me as I knew nothing of this site until this morning. I'll send the link to my friend to see what her take on it is.
