Animals demonstrate an ability to tune into the lines of magnetic fields to navigate to and fro - perhaps early man had a similar facility, albeit entirely unconcious, which prompted the need to erect monuments etc and he interpreted the 'need' as a desire to worship the goddess. Rationalisation and cognitive thought developing would pretty much screen out such subtle activity - no wonder elective trepanation appeared. It'd be nice to be so unfettered and tuned in to Ur.
