Digital SLR's (lens changing types) have a dirty secret, dirt on the sensor is a very real, very annoying pain in the YKW. They are much more responsive though and seeing through an optical viewfinder compared to a screen is a revelation, the photos can stand much more funny business in photoshop before turning into mush as well.

If you can see yourself getting serious about photography in the future then a DSLR is definitely the way to go, you may dump the camera after two or three years but good lenses will last a lifetime and rarely need upgrading. If I were advising someone on what camera to get, I'd say the lens system is more important than the fancy new camera, if there isnt a good lense outfit available to suit your needs and budget then you cold end up spending a lot and then finding yourself wanting to change systems in years to come, at even greater expense. The way Nikon and Cannon are dominating things now, who knows what other companies will be in the DSLR business in 5 or 10 years time.

In fixed lens cameras there are the superb panasonics (Z30 I think) with amazing Leica lenses and excellent build quality, would definitely be my first choice of fixed lens camera.

Canon Digital Ixus i

4 megapixel, tiny, take it everywhere, does whatever I ask, has a million settings I haven't a clue how to use, rechargeable battery lasts a long time, I've never flattened it in one shooting session unless on macro ( 25 shots last time I tried it) or video 3-4 mins. The zoom isn't as good as I'd like, so I don't use it much. If it clapped out tomorrow, I've more than had my money's worth and fun out of it.

I'm very happy with this quality. This image is as uploaded from the camera, no messing at all.

I was choosing between the Cannon 300D and the D70 at the time, the D70 blew the 300D away as far as I could see. I've crossed posts, these two posts explain all!

Any of those cameras have a high speed film mode?

It makes me mildly depressed to admit it, but CML is pretty much on the head of the nail there.

Having seen a direct comparison between his D70, and my 350D, my nagging suspicion that I should have opted for the former has been confirmed. Mr McL, I was amazed at the clarity of your Old Hartley pics
http://www.themodernantiquarian.com/post/42286
(I can guarantee CML's assertions about photoshoppery folks, I saw the images as they were taken, and they have all that colour and clarity of the one in the link above, straight out of the camera).

Your rockarty-Wolfness, as I'm assuming you're gonna be wanting some pretty low-light shots (I'm thinking Cairnholy for instance) for the RA, I'd go for the D70 if it comes down to a choice twixt it and the Canon, despite price differences.
In defence of the Canon DSLRs, the 350D is the bottom end of the bracket, and I am still using the kit lens, so that might be contributing to the lower quality. Praps a better EOS with a better lens would see a marked improvement.

It might be worth thinking about what kind of lens is best for the RA, and then deciding on availability/cost of the lenses?

It's a headtwister of a job, but it must be worth doing the thinking *before* purchasing, not after ;)

I've been looking through my slides and altho I resisted going digital for a long time I still think digi has a long way to go.
The expense of shooting on slide film is what eventualy won me over but in hind sight I do have regrets.
I have lost more than a few photo sales because the quality of digital is not good enough.
I once sold a slide of a single white cloud in a blue sky for 8K as it could be blow up to billboard size.
(Thanks BA - kerching!)
Looking at my 10 X 8 slides I am hoping it won't be too long before we start to see 1gig-a-pixel+ cameras.

Scanners...

That's the way forward man Mr W.

Never mind getting a new DSLR, get a USB powered scanner, lug it and a laptop out to the RA, turn it upside down, bob's yer uncle...

Direct scanography of rock art is the way forward I tell you! Just because it probably won't work is a poor reason not to be unreasonably attached to the idea ;)
