Routing

Routing meaning To bellow. Used of cattle, comes from Middle English routen, to roar, from Old Norse rauta.

So that could well be where it comes from.

I reckon, in my simplified way, it might just mean a noisy waterfall then. A Roaring Waterfall.

Presumably there was more of it in the past if that's the case, because it's normally pretty peaceful now.

Just wanted to know if they'd been dated as Bronze Age or Iron Age 'cos I was interested.

I second that interest.
Is there a general assumption that zoomorphic carvings were created later than abstract motifs. 'cos that's not the case with cave painting. But then Pebs is right that saying those carvings are deer is pushing the definition of deer to a fairly abstract degree. They may be carvings of goats and the hill should really be called deerscrag.
