By figurative I meant representative of something rather than abstract.
Yes, the vast majority of C&R marks are on horizontal surfaces, but I know of plenty of examples of them on vertical surfaces too. I think the general interpretation is that horizontal = female, vertical = male.
The Galician stuff is generally on horizontal surfaces.

I get you about the figurative thing there KK.
I've a bad tendency to put non-figurative, non-cup and ring motifs into a dustbin category of "spirals and stuff that makes it all more confusing"
I reckon I should pay more attention to the stuff outside of the north of england also;-)

There's quite a few rocks on Ilkley Moor with carvings on vertical faces... take a walk around Green Gates, which is pretty extraordinary considering most of the rest around the moor are on horizontal faces.
The rock art at Valcomonica in Italy is pretty mind blowing too. They span from Neolithic to Irom Age.
