Yup, Cris K. is out of jail & sober (enough to go on tour anyway.) Wonder what ever happened to Derrick -- he used to be the webmaster of their site during the hiatus years, wrote the liner notes for the Ryko reissues, etc. I will certainly give Liars more listens . . . at the moment my impression is the first half is packed with "hits", the second half mostly 2 minute filler songs. I think the ballad that ends this album suffers by comparison to "Other side of Mt. H" -- too similar, but not as good. I'd have to say "Drowned" and "Drum" are probably two of my three favorite records of the century so far! (Scott Walker is the third.) Was listening to "Drowned" the other day, and realised that other than drums and voice I can't even tell what "instruments" they're using! (Or is it all samplers and stuff?!?) Fantastic zoundz! And I dig it all the more cuz critics h-a-t-e-d it so much when it came out. Cretins!

I remember reading about him getting shot during the course of a drug deal that went wrong a couple of years ago and thinking "poor sod" - how the (once)mighty have fallen. I agree about the Liars' last two records - I was fortunate enough to catch them live just before the second one came out, and in terms of audience reaction it was one of the most polarising gigs I've ever seen. My friends and I loved it, but I heard all sorts of derogatory comments like "pretentious art-wank" from people who'd obviously come expecting to hear stuff more along the lines of their first album.

I haven't checked that list in a while so don't know if he's still on there regularly but still was up until recently. Stevo

Enjoyed a lot of LPs this year... Clinic´s Funf The Pyramids new one Fiery Furnaces new one, The GENIUS of Blues Control, Steve Reid´s Daxaar LP, that I love... Jeffrey Lewis´s Crass covers LP, That new Chinese Pop compilation (thats pretty demented), Sunburned Circle, The Terry Riley reissues A great Dutch garage pop band called Appie Kim (get that if you like great leftfield pop) The Ballad of the Book The Morr singles compilation... Alex Delivery´s Star Destroyer but I´ve just been listening to a lot of garage and for some reason the Saints and Ed Kuepper. Anyone else dig Kuepper on here I wonder..

So I wonder why he's not playing with them anymore? I heard the breakup circa '96 was a bit nasty, but I was under the impression it was mostly between the bros. PS - I have a friend who it turns out went to Arizona State in the 80's, when Meat Puppets were in their glory days. He used to be buds with Derrick's brother, who was a music major of the avante garde stripe and a raging bearded hippie!
