Ah, I think it was deeper than that. It was a rejection of modern values, Christian values to be exact, and wanting to return to their pagan roots. It's very spiritual music, really. Or, was. Mike

Venom were great. Primitive, gonzoid thrash that sounded like it was recorded in a broom cupboard. I knew Jeff, Tony and Conrad ... decent bunch of fellas, though Conrad was a little, uh, strange at times. 'Manitou' is in my all time metal top 10. Black Metal, particularly the stuff from Norway, is a bit of a gray area for me :-) ... always a bit wary, given the suggestions some bands had ties with the extreme right, though I wouldn't want to tar the whole movement with that brush. Out of interest, what are Meshuggah like? Are they Black Metal?

Messhugah are more a kind of proggy and complicated death metal creature with stop-start bits and complex time changes etc. BTW a newish black metal band I can happily recommend are called Martriden from the US. They mix a touch of old school with acoustic flourishes and proggy embellishments. I likes 'em!

Darkthrone's 'A Blaze in the Northern Sky' is quite the classic. Furze, of course - Necromanzee Cogent and UTD are great. Emperor's 'In the Nightside Eclipse'. If you want to go back a bit to the roots of BM, check out Bathory's 'Under the Sign of the Black Mark' - it's their 3rd album but I'd say their best.
