Re: Megalithic Art
Mar 31, 2003, 00:02
sorry dude , when I talked about idols , I meant in British prehistory. I am aware of the multitude of European examples, my personal favourites are from the Vinca and Lepoenski Vir cultures of the Danube and Former Yugoslavia. As I type this a reproduction of the headless big-assed earth momma from Hagar Qim is looking over my shoulder.
We do have many common symbols but a common language does not neccessarily follow, maybe more of a common origin of the symbols but then time and divergance allow different meanings to evolve. Just look at how modern symbolism has changed over the past 100 years. With Rock art we are looking at a time span of millennia.
Cups and rings are some of the simplest motifs, yet can be utalised in extremely complex forms and to me remain the most enigmatic.
The late Ronald Morris researched proposed explanations for these motifs and found 104 to accounts for British cups and rings, more have been added since.
I'll hit the scanner tomorrow.
