OT: Wells and folklore
Sep 23, 2009, 10:54
I know this will attract flak from some quarters, as it's a bit off-topic for TMA, but...

Branwen - I've been thoroughly enjoying you many informed posts on so many subjects!

As some people here will know, I have an interest in wells and water-lore, and this is a great story! Not untypical in a lot of ways, but always fascinating to hear...

What I really wanted to ask is - do you have a website or blog with more info on it? I'd love too read more of this stuff! :)

I too have enjoyed Branwen's contribution, she may not want to give all her stories away at once though.

Here is something to keep you going "when we met in the wood at the well so wearie!"

That's brilliant June , I have looked for that for ages , the problem was searching for the Wells of wearie when it was so wearie , or as I ahd heard it o' wearie .The place name is confusing .There is no Cuthilldorie in Fife that i can find but there are two Cuthill's in the Lothians .

Yes, I'm into wells too. My interest includes water that is stained red ny dissolved - or partially dissolved - iron salts and their attendant healing properties.

I can think of some chalybeate wells that might suit your purpose , one in particular in the Monadhliath at NH 55965 03200 is a stinking red morasse in the middle of nowhere .

Well ... it will certainly interest me too Rhiannon, I have saved the link, thanks.

Thank you too, for you kind comment Tiompan, though I have to say there is always luck involved when searching for information on the internet.

Stonegloves, the most obvious 'iron element' healing spring that comes to mind is the Red Spring in Chalice Well Garden at Glastonbury. It is long way from you though, I should think anywhere in Scotland would be nearer.

No, I have one in Bolton that interests me. In Halliwell! The local history society say the Holy Well is at one place, actually in the parish of Heaton, and I say it is the monging one on the roadside that the council try to divert/stem/alter. If it's iron-rich it will have some healing properties - against anaemia, at least. The sulfur may have some 'germicidal' properties. The clear water of the supposed holy well has never been associated with curative powers.

Rhiannon (or anyone else) I was wondering if you knew anything about the 'rare geological phenomenon' mud springs at Wootton Bassett in north Wiltshire. I haven't actually seen them myself.
