Local radio reported earlier today that the future of Silbury is causing great concern. It would appear that fears are growing that it could implode due to a massive volume of water accumulating in the structure as a result of past tunnelling.

The National Trust have said they are now gravely concerned about Silbury.

Well I don't have Pete's eye for detail or experience in looking in this way, so Silbury was as I saw it on the way back home the other day. I also listened to two local radio news & there was no report. Any idea what station ?

I guess we shall just have to wait and see what appears on the news.

Always worth the visit though isn't it! Lots of people detour just to pass it and with the light tonight it was maginificent.

Fingers crossed and best wishes to those at the sharp end.

Well a briefing by Skanska was due to be published on Monday and I'm wondering if something has come out too early. Now that it has it might be sensible for EH to make a statement of some sort to avoid people thinking worse than is justified. Obviously an internal risk has been identified but I'd be astonished if it is likely to affect the surface appearance anytime soon. If that's right though it won't do anyone any good to go through the whole weekend with people thinking otherwise.

Cheers Littlestone, I have rang BBC Radio Wiltshire News again just now and they're looking into it.

Silbury Update Week 10 "new Version"
Jul 27, 2007, 09:04
"English Heritage have had to temporarily halt the repair works at Silbury Hill because of
complications caused by instability above the central Atkinson chamber within the centre of
the Hill, which has also been exacerbated by the volume of rainfall in the last week or so.
Our expert archaeologists and engineers are developing a solution to take the
project forward, with the aim to stabilise the Hill for the long term. We will issue a
new programme for the completion of the works as soon as possible."
