Julian's Mellotron 400 was processed with either the Korg MS20 or a Korg Monotron (both were involved, but the precise patching now escapes me). We also used a Roland JX-3P.

Thanks for the info Holy, I had a hunch about it being a Korg MS-20, but something else about that sound made me think it was different. I've been looking at the remade MS-20 as a tabletop unit ( http://www.korg.com/us/products/dj/ms_20mkit/ ), it looks like a deadly instrument, but maybe a bit much for a first synth purchase.
