I have been a bit overwhelmed by Robert Trujillo's genius "Jaco" documentary. Not much else has had a look in. Jaco gets the blame for all sorts of lapses of taste amongst bass players of every stripe but he remains the man who could make the instrument sing like a horn and a fiddle and the human voice with great economy. As with John Bonham it's the economy that his followers have failed to appreciate and the amazing vibrato is all in the hands and not in the rig. Buy all the gear and play as fast as you like but that's totally misunderstanding what made him an innovator. That's the thing about having a killer tone on any instrument. You simply don't have to play as hard or as long or as fast or as loud as the next person.
