Knifeworld – Bottled Out Of Eden. New one from Kavus Torabi’s band, he of Guapo, ex of Cardiacs, and DJ partner to Steve Davis. What I’ve heard of their stuff previously has been a bit obtuse for my ears, but this one seems a bit more tuneful and direct. He also does a fine impression of Brian Eno’s very English singing. Motorpsycho – Here Be Monsters. This is nice in a Floydian way, but it sounds a bit knackered overall. They should take a proper holiday. Crumbling Ghost – Five Songs. Excellent: http://witheredhandrecords.bandcamp.com/track/swansea-town Mondo Drag – The Occultation Of Light. As is this if you’re after that ‘70s but not really the 70s’ rock experience: https://mondodrag.bandcamp.com/track/rising-omen Roly Porter – Third Law. Despite having a name like a Tory backbencher from the 80s, Mr Porter has been getting good reviews, so I had a listen. Hmmm, it’s quite good, but I’m not sure what it is. Interstellar drone? Environmental dubstep? Cosmic concrète? At times, I’m not even sure it qualifies as music, sounding more like the laboured wheezing of the spheres. Here’s one that flirts with a tune towards the end: https://soundcloud.com/tri_angle_records/roly-porter-known-space Field Music – Commontime. Hard to dislike FM, even as they turn up the dial marked ‘80s soul funk’ a little bit higher each time, but this could benefit from being a few songs shorter. Cavern Of Anti-Matter – Void Beats/Invocation Trex. Take out the two vocal tracks (particularly the one featuring Sonic Boom) and this is pretty much a five star album. Black Mountain – ‘Mothers Of The Sun’. I’ve always been a bit suspicious of this lot, but the keyboardist’s excellent solo outings as Sinoia Caves have made me think I need to reassess them. Here’s a case in point, watching this video for their new song, thinking it’s a bit ‘Blackstar’/Jodorowsky on a budget, and the vocals are over-declamatory… but there’s some great keys, and it has quite a cool riff: http://jagjaguwar.com/embed/blackmountain_mothersofthesun.php Massive Attack – Ritual Spirit EP. I haven’t really listened to much MA since the underwhelming 100th Window, but this is pretty good, and nice that they’ve hooked up with Young Fathers. Tricky’s back too, his track in particular showing what they do so well, taking a simple motif and magnifying it into something, err, massive: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hWSt_q7M3zI Hawkwind – Hall Of The Mountain Grill. A real curate’s egg of an album. It doesn’t really hang together, but some great stuff herein nevertheless. ‘Psychedelic Warlords’ is downright funky in places, would have loved for them to have done more stuff like this. The arrival of Simon House completely transforms their sound too – what did your average HW fan make of the title track in 1974 I wonder? Recognised it as a rather wonderful piece of music, I hope, biker tears trickling down bushy cheeks… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sFd7elFVaQA (great video BTW, taken from The Black Hole, which was marketed as a kids SF film from Disney, but this end sequence is more like Ken Russell at his trippiest)

Big replayer this week: Nub - Nub Got this from my mate for Christmas, only 8 years after it was released. I really like it, very much an early-mid 90s sounding rock album by a group who were "big" in Leeds back then. Influences are probably Jesus Lizard-y. Very good. Otherwise: The Durutti Column - Amigos em Portugal (remastered) The Durutti Column - Live At The Venue (remastered) Felt - Let The Snakes Crinkle Their Heads To Death Close Lobsters - Foxheads Stalk This Land Close Lobsters - Headache Rhetoric Julian Cope - "Eve's Volcano"/"Charlotte Anne"/"5 O'Clock World" CD singles The Darling Buds - Pop Said The Cure - "Just Like Heaven"/"Lullaby"/"Love Song" CD singles Manic Street Preachers - Lipstick Traces Gamelan Semara Ratih of Bali - Returning Minimalism Marnie - Crystal World Marnie - "The Hunter" 12" New Order - "Tutti Frutti" mixes

If you're into the Dead you should look at archive.org. Used to be all the recorded gigs there in d/ldable soundfiles. I think they're reduced taht quite a bit but there's still streamable versions of lots of stuff https://archive.org/details/GratefulDead I 'd particularly recommend sets from August 68 and May 70. Still haven't quite worked out when the particularly hot run in '69 is could be February when several sets were excerpted for Live Dead or April which is also really good. I think the run at the Ark from 21-23 is pretty good. Stevo

Sharron Kraus, Meg Baird, Helena Espvall - "Bruton Town" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=29B479HR8nk I keep trying to sing this all the way through, as I love singing the harmonies. But the lyrics are so profoundly moving, I have never managed it once. Sharron Kraus (with Harriet Earis) - "Hen Llan", 2016. Recorders and harp only this time, and as beautiful as ever. Sharron is the real thing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4aeIDgL00Lg Trabant - "Húzd ki magad". One of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard, hissy background and all. I need it like a drug. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0zLzV12--1E Luboš Fišer - "In the garden with statues", from the film, Dotek motýla. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=84A5TXE0TXY Beautiful and overflowing with pathos. Sigur Lie / Knabenchor Solvguttene - "Sne". A sublime composition and beautifully performed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kL_5E7n9O3w Knabenchor Solvguttene Guttekor, Oslo - "Panis Angelicus / Pié Jesu". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=elvMsJDoXJE Yma Sumac - "Chuncho". One of the most astonishing voices I have ever heard. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1KprLT-JxPY The most amazing short animation film from the Russian, Yuri Norstein - "Tale of Tales", with music by: Music and poetry[edit] In addition to the original score composed by Mikhail Meyerovich, this film makes use of several other pieces of music. Excerpts from works by Bach (notably the E flat minor Prelude BWV 853 (from The Well-Tempered Clavier)) and Mozart (the Andante second movement from Piano Concerto No. 4 in G major, K41) are used, and the World War II era tango Weary Sun, written by Jerzy Petersburski, features prominently. However, the most important musical inspiration is the following traditional Russian lullaby, which is included in the film in both instrumental and vocal form. Russian Transliteration English translation ???-??????-???, ?? ?????? ?? ????. ?????? ????????? ??????, ?? ??????? ?? ????? ? ?????? ?? ????? ??? ????????? ??????. Bayu-bayushki-bayu, Ne lozhisya na krayu. Pridyot serenkiy volchok, On ukhvatit za bochok I utashchit vo lesok Pod rakitovy kustok. Baby, baby, rock-a-bye On the edge you mustn't lie Or the little grey wolf will come And will nip you on the tum, Tug you off into the wood Underneath the willow-root. Many situations in the film actually derive from this lullaby, as well as the character of the little grey wolf. Indeed, the film's original title (rejected by the Soviet censors) was The Little Grey Wolf Will Come. The name Tale of Tales came from a poem of the same name by Turkish poet Naz?m Hikmet that Norshteyn loved since 1962.[1][3] Russian Transliteration English translation ????? ??? ????? - ??????, ?????, ??????, ? ? ???? ??????. ???? ??????????, ?????? ???????, ?????? ??????, ????? ???????, ? ????? ???????. ????? ????, ?????!.. Stoim nad vodoy - solntse, koshka, chinara, ya i nasha sud'ba. Voda prochladnaya, Chinara vysokaya, Solntse svyetit, Koshka dryemlyet, Ya stihi sochinyayu Slava Bogu, zhivyom!.. We stand above the water - sun, cat, plane tree, me and our destiny. The water is cool, The plane tree is tall, The sun is shining, The cat is dozing, I write verses. Thank God, we live!.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t-Xne3FztR0 Edit - Russian text has become question marks! Magpahi - "Tired and Weary Traveller". Beautiful. I yearn to hear more from this woman. She is so pure. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TRVDZXY2Glw Hala Strana - "Stouthrief". Oh my ... gorgeous. I could waltz for hours! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EDsg1KlPUPE And the rest!

It's a lovely thing - I have one too. Tell you what though, for sheer weight and heavy splendidness of packaging, the cover of Altar (Sunn O)))) and Boris) beats it hands down!
