I also saw him in a local nightclub singing to backing tapes! I saw George McCrae like that too in the early 90's. That was a real surprise as I didn't know he was on! I heard the DJ mention his name and I thought he was gonna play Rock Your Baby or something, but no the man himself then walked on...
