For a sideways look at this musical culture I would hugely recommend Eugene Chadbourne's "There'll Be No Tears Tonight" which also features some of John Zorn's best playing as a side man. Here are a couple of tunes from it .... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wrd4vmkokLw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rh6LA0uHGho

Merle is definitely on my list. I've making notes on everyone's suggestions so I can work through it and see what I can manage to track down on the cheapo side. Much appreciated everyone.

Aye, the thing with Chet Atkins is that, while he was an insanely good guitarist ... he could also be very commercial. The more traditional, old school stuff is wonderful ... the countrypolitan-style covers of well known popular tunes of the day ... well it's a bit like if there was a series of albums where "The Shadows Salute The Music Of ..."

THere's a good 2cd compilation of his that I have and I think was nearly mid-price.http://www.amazon.co.uk/Very-Best-Merle-Haggard/dp/B000R4S5Z6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1443346563&sr=8-1&keywords=Merle+haggard I think I was looking at it in FOPP a couple of years ago thinking of buying it for my brother's girlfriend who is into at least johnny cash so I keep buying her more wider choices fo good country stuff. Just reminded that there was an UNCUT cover mounted cd at the start of last year that had a great array of country that would have inspired Gram Parsons, since the edition had a large GP article in it. http://www.discogs.com/Various-Honky-Tonk-Heroes-The-Music-That-Inspired-Gram-Parsons/master/610461 nOt sure where you'd get that but it might be up on a torrent site. Quite good tracklisting I thought at the time & thinking of good 2cd compilations I have one on Glenn Campbell that's pretty comprehensive http://www.discogs.com/Glen-Campbell-The-Capitol-Years-6577/release/3385208

One of George Harrison's big influences hence the Gretsch and tasteful style of playing. Unfairly overlooked in the surge of flash rock soloists. A case of less is often more.

Thanks Stevo. That Merle Haggard looks very good and quite affordable too. Glen Campbell I also need to properly check out because I know what esteem he is held in.
