The journalist possibly most aligned with the Liverpool scene, etc, was Dave McCullough in Sounds and he went off Julian. I think he gave the WSYM LP something like two and a half stars. IIRC he liked the more garagey direction of tracks like Bandy's First Jump but wasn't impressed with side two (they are quite different sides).

Having fallen in love with Head Hang Low immediately via the Peel session version I wanted that as the first solo single, failing that Greatness & Perfection which admittedly was released in 45 form the following year.

Sunshine Playroom wasn't an obvious single for me, but after the initial, er, shock I did think it had hit potential if it got the airplay. It just needed a few plays to become an earworm, demonstrated by a non-Cope fan friend really getting into it after I'd played it a few times. I think one of the weekly papers predicted it'd be a hit though?

I think the Associates did during the year they put out the singles taht make up 4th Drawer Down.
THink The Cure and The banshees may have done too. & I think the Glove was a collaboration based heavily on the ingestion of the substances concerned.

Our departed Lord Lucan told me he'd met Steve Severin and that he was quite open in talking about how the whole band would drop acid and listen to Wire's "Chairs Missing" for inspiration, although I don't know at what stage of their career that happened. I didn't know about the Associates, but listening to "Fourth Drawer Down" I can believe it. Like the Teardrops, another one-off band who had a couple of big hits but whose muse eventually turned out to be too wayward for long-term commercial success.

I suspect that a few punk-era bands might have dabbled in hallucinogens but kept quiet about it because speed was the fashionable drug du jour and LSD was associated with smelly hippies. Of course a few (such as the Blue Orchids) made no secret of it.

Didn't David Bailey direct the Sunshine Playroom video?

He did. And then no-one would show it!
