MD loops
Oct 23, 2014, 16:42
I do the same! Picked up a few MD recorders last year on ebay for about a tenner a go. The Sony ones are great for gapless looping and I keep a Sharp one with a small electet mic in my bag most of the time for grabbing unusual sounds.

In the search for perfect moments...

reminds me of an article in the Wire a few months back with an artist who worked exclusively with the run-out grooves of records where they lock. She would spend hours listening for the critical point when the groove wore in to the correct sound.

Bloody 'ell, that's dedication.

S'pose the outcome is not too disimilar to the glitch stuff created by the likes of Pansonic, Oval, Isan etc.

I'm genuinely surprised that more peeps don't do it. It only really takes an ear for a good loop point, but even that isn't so important, as those happy accidents can be wonderful.

Started myself, as I couldn't afford a decent laptop to create electronic music, and it seemed a cheap way of getting involved.

Not sure what the copyright implications are in terms of use of other peeps music (tho with a keyboard and FX unt it's esy to make your own). 9 times out of 10, the stuff is unrecognisable from the original anyhow.
My missus says anything up to 17 seconds is copyright free, though don't quote me on that.

My set up was (is I suppose) 2X Sony portable MD's, 2 x Sharp (better recording through inputs I feel), coupla old Aiwa auto reverse walkman's, coupla cheap multi FX units picked. Cheapo Mapin analogue delay, Maplin mixer, external mic (like yourself for sampling environmental noises and sounds I create). In recent years, a Korg Monoton Delay and a Nintendo DS running DS10 software (Basicaly a cheap Korg MS10 emultor...has a kaos pad inclued which is great fun). Do have an Roland SH101, but it really needs a service, and half the keyboard and ADSR needs replacing.

Sadly, never really recorded anything though, as all I had was my old hissy tape to do that. Was fun at the time though.

Feel bad about hi-jacking/diverting the thread.

Here's a remix of 'Mother Sky' I cam across a few years ago that's rather jolly, and turns up on mix tapes I make from time to time.

I've still got the MD players I used to take out for gigs. They're great devices and dirt cheap to get hold of now. Mainly used them for storing samples though

Love this idea.

Slightly tangential use of your concept: I have a few LPs which sometimes stuck in one particular place (there's a track on the Section 25 Love & Hate album for example) and now when I hear them on CD still I expect the sticky bit, but it never comes. Using your idea I could recreate the sticky bit at the right point. Insanity will probably follow shortly afterwards though.

those Factory vinyl pressings were not of the highest spec....even though the early red translucent vinyl copies are fetching silly prices on the ebay market.
'The Process' is a S25 track I can play over and over again - never get bored of that song.
