Old Vinyl Bootlegs
Sep 21, 2014, 20:36
There uses to be a record shop in Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Many moons ago, where they took regular deliveries of vinyl bootleg albums. Mostly sneaky recordings done at classic gigs by Bowie, Hendrix, Pink Floyd et al.

As an impoverished student, I couldn't really afford any for myself, but did purchase a few on behalf of mates, back home in Warwickshire. I usually ran off a cassette copy, before delivering them, of course! Deep Purple's 'On The Wings of A Russian Fox Bat', being one such title - and I seem to recall getting a Bowie one, if memory serves called ' The Wembley Wizard'.

I did bag one for myself, though - and still have it: Led Zeppelin - 'Mudslide'

I also acquired possibly the only Marc Bolan one: 'Son Of Magical, Pouting Panache', back in the early 80s.

Anybody else own any naughty vinyl?

I,ve never owned any that I can think of, but I do recall the original Virgin record shop in Glasgow in the early 70's had a bootleg section.

i have still do have some vinyl bootlegs. Here are some that i still have:

Pink Floyd: Eclipsed 2 Lp set (one being live dark side and the other has echoes, fat old
sun, one of these days.)

Tim Buckley: Happy Mad ( danish radio 1968 & top gear bbc 1970)

Donovan: Live at the Reedy River Junction)

The PInk Floyd and Donovan record are in plain white sleeves with a sheet simple paper printout/w photo saying what it is and what is on the record. The Tim Buckley bootleg is also white but is actually printed on the front and back cover. Even features the lyrics to gypsy woman and buzzin fly. Now i'm totally going to have to put these on again and test their worth.

Picked up a great Prince double coloured vinyl album from 1981 at a record fair a few years back, and some great white label stuff, an ok quality cassette of Cope in Leicester from the Peggy Suicide tour and that rather great Cope DVD that I'd been looking for for years from Phoenix festival.

Pity never seem to see them around these days, I suppose with so much internet presence the days of the good old bootleg are gone forever.

Used to be a great market stall up by the big Argos in Brum before they closed the mini market down before redevelopment. Remember there were always loads of Iggy/Stooges boots as well as bucket loads of Sex Pistols,Joy Division, Banshees, Cure, Sisters of Mercy and The Smiths to be had. Picked up quite a few back in the day, as he sold em' pretty cheap, a few that are still on the shelves.

Didn't the label ROIR put out unofficial/official boots and demo collections? Got a New York Dolls album called Lipstick Killers and an Einsturzende Neubauten cassette called 2x4.

List of ROIR releases....

I have a thick handful from the Butthole Surfers, whom I took to be near-mystics in my younger days (and when they still had 2 drummers, this was a reasonable conclusion).

I knew they were not legit, and that the band received no funds from them, but I couldn't resist. I was so thirsty for more of their work, and the live shows were few and far between. I was able to speak to King Coffey (one of the drummers) at one point and he said not to feel bad, the reason they didn't want them out there wasn't because of cash, it was because they sounded so shitty (which was true). Nonetheless, I am very grateful to have had all those faux-show experiences alone in my room, thin and artificial as they might have been. In one sense they really were, but in another, they were a perfect canvas onto which I could project my own version of a fairly gnarly musical peak experience.
