I actually had another listen of Returning Golden Back earlier in the summer, and found myself liking it slightly more than when I wrote that RYM review. Still, I found its appeal to be primarily historical / conceptual rather than musical.
After hearing a few of the other TKB releases, I'm beginning to wonder if, aside from "Throw Away Your Books," there is no masterpiece. "The Story of Eight Dogs" and "Saiyuki" are charmingly earnest, and definitely worth hearing, but lack the full-on psychedelic/garage rock power of "Throw Away Your Books". Perhaps Shuji Terayama's involvement with that project is what gives it its added intensity.
I've still not heard the original Golden Bat... though the Returning Golden Bat CD reissue has a "Golden Bat" bonus track, which is in line with the material on "Saiyuki" and "Eight Dogs."
I should probably give Saiyuki another listen after Sin Agog's inspiring review!
