I always thought Lone Pigeon/Gordon Anderson had/has the closest link to my main man Barrett with the fragility of mind and the nose for a good tune.

Gordon Anderson is certainly a Barrett of the modern age but there are also definite touches of Syd's gonzo approach within the Beta Band that he left behind (She's The One, the lazy strum of It's Over and particularly Dr Baker which is sort of Jugband Blues performed by Faust).

"Birthday" off Leisure always seemed a bit Syd-ish to me.

Definitely! And like 'Sing' off the same album is sort of Madcap Laughs era Syd through a Tamworth era-Cope filter. Whilst Cope was undoubtedly influenced/inspired by Barrett to an extent whilst never particularly sounding like him, Blur often completed that cycle!
Also, after my previous post I remembered the absolutely arch-Barrett of Far Out off Parklife, notably sung and written by Alex James and sounding as at odds with the album's concept as it might be to James' then louche personailty. There's also a heavy psych-rock electric demo version (ably piloted by Coxon) which is even more at odds with Blur's Britpop sound and manages to hammer the Astronomy Domine point home even further!

Indeed, and don't forget Levity Ball off the same album which is a superb Astronomy Domine-alike!

Don't hear any Syd in Blur myself. Nothing against Coxon or the other members, but Albarn is almost as hateful a character as Bono, Chris Martin or Alex Turner. 'Tender Is The Nighr' in particular is so pompous in it's self-concious desire to be an epic classic for the ages that it can induce feelings of nausea.

Coxon is a huge Barrett devotee. He may not sound like Syd, most of the time, but you do get the impression that he was a huge influence on him, which obviously made Blur who they were. Simple songs with occasionally complex or sometimes facile lyrics. And who are you to say? And what has Alex Turner ever done badly to you? Apart from being more astute and possibley more literate? The first Arctic Monkeys record is a work of genius (some borrowed fom JCC), but why the neg? Grow up?
