Pixies 'Doolittle' demos stomp all over the Gil Norton versions.

The Lennon demos are on the Anthology box set thingy. Unfortunatley, mines got lost. I have a copy digitized. Sad, as it's one hell of a beast.

You mean the Lennon Anthology and not the Beatles ones, right? If that's got a bunch more bedroom beauties like Real Love, I'm up for it.

Word. Their best stuff, I think. They even had a bit of an eco-synth-warrior vibe in parts at that stage of their career.

The acoustic only demo of George's 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps' is gorgeous and very intimate, totally different to the overblown band plus Clapton version that was eventually released. See also, the acoustic guitar/tamboura version of 'Across The Universe' on 'Let It Be(Naked)'. Simply beautiful.

Do Peel Sessions count as demos?
If So...

1986 - Slab - The Aniimals Are All Eating People Pie. Slower and more (early) Swans like than album version. ('Proper' version on superb album Discension and there's a funkier version on a 12" from 88' called 'People Pie').

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - St. Huck.
Peel version (March 84') has a real lofi urgency/desperation compared to the version on 'From Her To Eternity'.
Both versions have a killa lyric though, one of his best IMO.
Peel: (From 8.17) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L0Yvd0Orhdg
Album: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Af275kF9DQM.

Bauhaus - Swing The Heartache (Peel). Has more synth washes lower in the mix and an electronic bass pulse that I feel fits the song better.
Peel - (From About 46.16) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CHCbLPuplEE

Broadcast - Pendulum (Peel Session 2003). Not a lot different to album version, but synths have loads more yummy resonance and incidental unsettling sounds.

Broadcast - The World Backwards - (Peel 96) I just like it more than the single recording.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=15-idr8GET8Broadcast -

Wire - Behind The Curtain (Early Versions 77-78)
Pretty much love every 'alt/demo.' version on here compared to the originals.
eg. Pink Flag http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ts7k7euCHW0
Finistaire - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=488FIdJvjp8&index=17&list=ALBTKoXRg38BB42fkLjegmTmyz3kxNxdXZ

Ditto Buzzcocks 'Times Up!' Pre Spiral Scratch 'demos'. Obviously al little rougher/raw (which I prefer) when compared to 'Different Kitchen' versions.

Could go on all day really.

If they do count (Peel Sessions), this is a bit of a cliche, but the Hatful of Hollow versions of songs from the first Smiths album have much more bite and fizz than the somewhat dreary album proper versions, especially if you'd heard the HFOH ones first, as I did.

The same applies to the Only Ones' Peel sessions. Best studio recordings they made buy some distance. "Miles from Nowhere" in particular blows the album version out of the water.

I was never much of a Smiths fan but I had HoH and think what you say is true apart from Reel Around The Fountain which IIRC has a chord missing in the Peel version that really makes a difference on the album cut. When you go back to the BBC version it sounds like a bit has been amputated off.
