The Wailing Ultimate was also massive for me, really kick-started an appreciation of music outside of the UK.

Other choice primers include:

In Love With These Times - Flying Nun comp, including the fantastic Straitjacket Fits: http://www.discogs.com/Various-In-Love-With-These-Times/master/21548

Just Say Yeah - potentially unfashionable, but actually rather good, post-goth/grebo comp. GBOA, Crazyhead and Bomb Party are all present and incorrect: http://www.discogs.com/Various-Just-Say-Yeah/release/893668

Downer Rock Genocide - great title, loads of gnarly old UK rock nuggets: http://www.discogs.com/Various-Downer-Rock-Genocide/release/1277608

Speaking My Mind: lots of hard psych/prog niceness (tons of these type of comps around, but this is the best, and toughest, I've heard): http://www.discogs.com/Various-Speaking-My-Mind-New-Rubble-Volume-2/release/1518251

'Gather In The Mushroooms'. I discovered this at the beginning of my journey into alt/psych folk. It introduced me to Fresh Maggots, Comus, Heron etc.

Good call. Great album. In many cases the tracks included are the best by the artist (okay subjective, to my mind certainly Forest and Fresh Maggots). Certainly an album that opened things up when I was in a cul de sac.

Anybody got the album by the guy who does All My Friends Are Back Again. Love that track.

Love compilation albums which are a vehicle perfect for singles-oriented genres.

So, ignoring soundtracks, multi-artist concept albums like the Hal Wilner sets and "tribute" albums I can highly recommend this lot ...

The Motown Story - this box set came out circa 1971 and was a regular Virgin retail "cut-out" item in the mid to late 70s. Covers the classic Motown era through the Psych Soul years and into the Cult-Of-Diana-Ross period with the whole thing ending up in 1970. A modest selection (by cd standards) of 60 ish tracks over five lps with the added bonus of a spoken introduction to each tune from the artist in question.

Beserkley Chartbusters
The OKeh Rhythm & Blues Story 1949-1957
The Casablanca Record Story
Let's Go! Joe Meek's Girls
Hustle!-Reggae Disco-Kingston, London, New York

A Breath Of Fresh Air - A Harvest Records Anthology 1969-1974
SEX: Too Fast to Live Too Young to Die
Country Got Soul (two volumes)
The Doo Wop Box
If Deejay Was Your Trade
Mojo Presents Soul Riot

I second Monganaut's recommendation for 'Grindcrusher' - a great one-stop thrash shop.

Others worth a mention are the Capricorn sampler 'Peaches' (nowt like a nice bit of Wet Willie, fnaar fnaar) and the four great Island samplers from 1969 to 1971: 'You Can All Join In', 'Nice Enough To Eat', 'Bumpers' and 'El Pea'. I'll always have a soft spot for the early Virgin sampler 'V' as well, as it was my first exposure to Hatfield and the North, among several other fine, semi-forgotten acts such as Clear Light and Chili Charles. And you'll never hear the over-maligned mid-70's version of the Magic Band sound better than on the two live tracks featured therein. I feel a long-delayed 'Unsung' review coming on...

The Trojan 2cd sets that were coming out around the turn of the millenium were all pretty phenomenal, or at least the ones I heard.

Nuggets as in 1972 and 4cd box set are both great, think the Volume II British set was decent too as were the California single city compis which I think were connected. Wish there had been something similar on Detroit - 4cd set of psychedelic/garage era material, one on Texas would have been pretty welcome too.

No New York and the DNA and Mars near complete collections. Hysteria by Lydia Lunch.

The Peel sessions full length cds on several artists notably the Birthday Party .

Crystal Days on The Bunnymen

At least a couple of the Strategies Against Architecture sets by Einsturzende Neubauten as well as Kalte Sterne the collection of early singles/various artist set appearances by them.

Loads of Proper box sets including the early Nat King Cole material, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Bob Wills, Hank Williams, Hillbilly Boogie, Farewell To Ireland set of early Irish stuff from NYC and Boston.
plus smaller sets on Moon Mullican, Son House, Flatt & Scruggs, Hank Snow, Professor Longhair and a few others.

THe JSP Remebetika sets.

The Zanzibara sets of East Coast African Taraab and related musics and the Ethiopiques sets done by the same French label.

African Scream Contest, Love's A real Thing, Ghana rocks and single artist sets on Mebusas, Orchestra Polyrythymo De Contonou, Psychedelic Aliens etc etc

Chet Baker sings the cd, which I think is about 3 lps of stuff.
Babs Gonzalez Weird Lullabye
Slim Gaillard Laughing In Rhythm
Miles Davis Circle In The Round
Swans Various Failures
Funkadelic Music For my Mother
Beatles past Masters
Rolling Stones London Years singles compi
Cabaret Voltaire Living Legends
Flipper Sex Bomb Baby
Charlatans The Amazing
Henry Cow The Road

Fuzzy Felt Folk, the ---- is not a Four Letter Word series
Death To Trad Rock
some of the sets that Bevis Frond compiled on psych & prog.

Sure I'll think of others if I put my mind to it, that was off the top of my head like.

That's a great list to which I'ii add the Chess Genesis Compilations. I only have 1, perhaps the other 3 planned were not released.

I used to have a love for the 2 volumes of Axe Attack that came our during the NWOBHM era. First time I ever heard Aerosmith and things like Frank Marino at least.

I've never been a huge fan of compilations really. Not to say I don't like them and enjoy them on occasion, but it's just I prefer the feeling of listening to a complete album by a particular band and artist. When I'm choosing something to listen to, it will more likely be an album than a comp.

That said, and rather ironically, I am currently listening to an old Mixmag freebie "Electro House" which I still love. I do have a large collection of such things and I guess some of them are less 'compilation' albums as such and more 'sampler albums' if you see what I mean. Although, a lot of the dance comps I have a unique DJ mash ups supposedly approximating a club night or some such. And some of the covermounts with mags like Metal Hammer have resulted in the joyous discovery of new stuff.

As I was scrolling down the thread I was thinking should have included the Nuggets and Pebbles box sets. Good Call!

That Stones London Years Singles Collection is a blinder too.

The Luke Haines Is Dead 3 disc career overview is a goody as well. Has out-takes B-Sides and alt versions from The Auteurs and Baader Meinhof period.

Also remember enjoying those Sonic Mook Experiment albums put out by Mute.

Also The Fall - Peel sessions is a stormer.

The Scientists - Weird Love is a great compilation of essential Scientists swamp rock, albeit that they re-recorded the songs (for me in superior super fuzzed form) for the LP.

Couldn't really see a non Brett Rixon Scientists as superior to the material he was on. There are 2 great compis of the Brett Rixon era the OOP Absolute and Swampland : The Birth Of The scientists. Actually 3 since I think there was a reissue of Blood Red River that had most of the singles from the time.

There was just something very different about the interlocking rhythm section of him and Boris Sujdovic. He looked a lot better behind a kit than Leeann too.

Oh yeah, didn't mention the Moodists 2 Fisted Art which was a set I'd anticipated for years hoping something like it would eventually appear.

Can also say the Venom P Stinger 2cd has ome great stuff on it, as does the feedtime 3cd set that came out last year.
