Chris Layhe will always have a place in my heart. Particularly his stuff on The Small Price of a Bicycle. First time I ever really noticed bass playing on stuff.

Best great big hairy bollocks bassist I've seen of late is Julia Ruzicka of Future of the Left.

J.J. is a given.
As is McCartney.

John Paul Jones
Carol Kay (for the Beach Boys and much, much more)
Scott Walker (played on most of his own stuff)
Colin Greenwood
Danny Thompson

This is a tough choice, and there are different standards for different kinds of music. As a bass player I have a lot of favourites! To make it easier for me, I'll stoop to categorising and give my top 5 for a couple of different broad 'genres'. These are favourites rather than me claiming they are the best players ever. If it was more than 5 I could certainly cram some more on the 'rock list' ;-)

ROCK
Cliff Burton
John Entwistle
Jack Bruce
Joey DeMaio (even if you don't like Manowar in general - I admit to liking some of their stuff - Joey's 'Sting of the Bumblebee' bass solo is all the evidence you need!)
Tim Bogert

JAZZ
Stanley Clarke
Reinhard Karwatky (Dzyan)
Bernard Paganotti
Barry Tiplady (Quasar [the Australian band - broadly jazz rock but really a lot more, as with Dzyan])
Charles Mingus
