Hi Ming. What's this like? I was well impressed with the track that Maconie played on the Freak Zone. It's that bloke from the Boosh etc right?

It's really good. Not like I was expecting based on a quick shufty on iTunes, but the songwriting is great. He's got a few really cracking couplets that'll make you laugh out loud, but it's the tunes that stand out for me. Well worth picking up, mate.

I've always felt Tommy was a great "composition", but a disappointing "album."

Other than Keith's stupendous drumming, it falls flat as a Who record. Wimpy guitars and not enough bottom end. Record label wouldn't pay for the orchestrations Pete wanted, so all you get is Entwistle's lonely french horn! Which sounds sort of ridiculous compared to the baroque psychedelic too-muchness of the time. (Not understated, just cheap!)

The live versions tend to be better. (I also enjoyed the Ken Russell film!)

Love this album, but it was pretty much the highpoint, decreasing returns from then on , bar their cover of Happy Days

Think you might be thinking of Julian Barrett, the musical one in the Boosh. Matt Berry was Dr. Sanchez in "Garth Marenghi's Dark Place" and the lascivious company boss in The IT Crowd (from the 2nd series on).
