Working on future radio shows, which had me listening to quite a bit of ASH RA TEMPEL and GRATEFUL DEAD (audience tapes especially.) SECOND FAMILY BAND - GOOD BLOOD, our second LP release this year out now on alt.vinyl and available from Norman records in the UK! (Hopefully Norman will have some copies of our other LP "DREAM RELEASE" soon too . . . shipping from USA isn't cheap.) BLACK TEMPEST - EX PROXIMA, love the first track jazz & all, will have to hear PROXIMA a bunch more to decide which I like better! ;-) CHROME - BOX CD1 (best of the 2nd & 3rd albums plus comp tracks from that era.) SUZI QUATRO - BEST OF (mix CD) IRON MAIDEN - BEST OF (mix CD) Live in concert: ? AND THE MYSTERIANS, the third time I've seen this legendary band. Only THE MONKS are as comparably brilliant when it comes to first-wave garage rock. Current lineup is exactly the same five guys who recorded "96 Tears" as teenagers 44 years ago!! Mr. Mark is as endearingly enigmatic and glamourous as ever (yeah baby awlright!) Opening bands THE ELECTRIC MESS (NYC) and THE OUTER MIND (Chicago) also did good 60's inspired sets to open. Weirdest music experience of the week: went to the post office and as I was waiting in line they were playing the full original version of Kraftwerk's "Autobahn" on the muzak system! Muzak has gotten hipper lately I guess?

SHINY BEAST – Captain Beefheart Not sure how this is rated today, as I seem to recall his latter-day stuff wasn’t revered as much as his earlier work, but I love this LP. Sounds better than it ever did - to me at least. SATAN’S CIRCUS – Death In Vegas I liked this one a lot when it came out. It seemed a real return to form after Scorpio Rising which seemed a bit disappointing after the fabulous Contino Sessions. Even so, I've felt that I've not played this as much as it deserved (which I guess is probably true of too many records these days!). So I dug it out and I was right. It is good. In fact those Krautrock-like beats sounds even better than I remembered. It’s gonna get far more listens from now on. BACK IN DENIM – Denim And there were Osmonds. Lots of Osmonds. Everywhere. Had forgotten there was a track called Bubblehead! DEUTSCHE ELEKTONISHE MUSIK – V/A Especially Amon Düül II’s Wie Der Wind Am Ende Einer Strasse. ALSO... No, I think mine is a compilation as it's dated 1978. They did a very enjoyable set at High Voltage. Always amazed how youthful and energetic Rod Argent seems. Russ Ballard looks like he's dyeing his hair and Jim Rodford has always looked old.

Thomas Stronen - Parish: This guy has been part of the Norwegian jazz scene for a long time and I've been meaning to check out his two solo recordings for a bit now. This is the first one I've managed to get hold of, and it's great. It's a very mellow album and has a lot in common with 'Food' (there is a version of Daddycation on it as it goes) and much less so the 'Humcrush' material. If you're after a lovely bit of improv jazz that won't scare your pets this is a good choice. John White & Gavin Bryars - Machine music: An early work of Bryars/White here (1978). Well, it's mostly a John white thing, Gavin Bryars is only credited with the composition of the track 'The Squirrel and the Rickety Racketty Bridge', though he plays on two other tracks. A lovely and fresh take on minimalism. It features Nyman, Bailey, Frith, Eno and Sandra Hill as musicians. Yep. With that list of musicians I really don't need to say much else about it tbh.Those that care prolly know all there is to know about these recordings, those that want to know can hit google. The Fall - OFYC Povarovo - Tchernovik: Russian doom jazz. Yes, it is a real genre...er.. apparently. Though I find very little similarities between the groups lumped under the term frankly. Of all of them, this is to me the one that sounds like what I'd hear in my head if someone said 'Doom Jazz' to me. Unlike the Mount Fuji Doomjazz collective, which while alright is a bit (like their alter ego The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz ensemble) of an obvious crossover thang (Is all this a reference to the blinding Mount Everest Trio of the 70s I oft wonder). Bohren & Der Club of Gore on the other hand.. well thats a different kettle of oily blood spattered fish. Anyway, yeah Povarorvo... Its Doom guys.. DOOM. Phonophani - Kreken: Marvellous, though it's taken me a while to let this invade my senses fully. It is to me a natural extension of what was started on Alogs Amateur album. A lot of Norwegian folk themes are getting deconstructed (or is that deterritiorialised) in this. What with this and Markus Popps recent 'Oh' EP (and a large lump of recent net label releases too) I'm detecting a whole new direction in Electronica emerging and it's getting me all excited. Edit : It's not that difficult on the aesthetic mind to trace this direction back to the early electro-acoustic gear of the 90s and that point where processed field recordings started becoming the meat in a lot of arrangements. Microstoria remix album anyone ? Ui innit, Ui is responsible. This currently passively defended opinion may change. Anyway, if 'Amateur' and 'Oak and Rock' did nothing for you then avoid this, you aren't ready for it guv. Edited : I meant Amateur, not Miniatures, why on earth did I get those confused ?! Faust - Faust is Last: I bloody love this I does. Sun Araw - On Patrol: I decided to give this a whirl cos it crops up in these threads a fair bit. I really don't see what all the fuss is about, sorry.

Shiny Beast is great as is the next album, Doc at the Radar Station. Definitely 2 of my favourite albums. But then i like the 2 albums in the mid 70's where he is supposed to have sold out.

Hail! Ramesses - Take the Curse. Maximum brooding heaviosity! Crushes all before it! Badmarsh & Shri - Dancing Drums. Mix of Asian beats, breaks with the amazing bass twiddling of Shri. Shri - Drum The Bass. Solo stuff of drum n bass n beats n pieces from virtuoso fretless dude. Anandar Shankar Experience & State of Bengal - Walk On. Vintage sitarist mixes it with Asian drum n bass project. Hadn't played for ages and it made me smile. Squarepusher - Hello Everything. One of his more accesible albums. Top stuff and the track "The Modern Bass Guitar" makes me laugh out loud with its silly cleverness. Meshuggah - Chaosphere. Polyrythmic death madness. Great. New Model Army - Today is a Good Day. Properly good album from NMA Paul Van Dyk - 45rpm. Old skool hands in the air trance album. Jane - Between Heaven & Hell. Hairy music! Neat Records: the Singles Vol 1 - NWOBHM themed compilation of from lank haired heroes flying V in the face of fashion. Hail! Plus, a few old Mixmag, Ministry Mag and Wax comps from years agone School of Seven Bells - Alpinisms. Lush shoegaze meets ethereal folk tinged electronics melange. Very nice. Have a nice week Tune ticklers x
