Hunter T Wolfe wrote: Various artists- Children of Nuggets. 4 CD box set borrowed from the library. Very enjoyable and quite nostalgic- I've already got a lot of what's on here- but a bizzarely conservative track selection considering this is meant to be an overview of the 80s psychedelic revival. Which for some reason means including The Church, That Petrol Emotion, The Godfathers, Screaming Trees and The Nerves- fine as they all may be- but skipping over The Jesus and Mary Chain, Loop, Spacemen 3, Gaye Bykers on Acid, The Shamen, Cardiacs, Psychic TV, The Butthole Surfers, Husker Du, My Bloody Valentine... in favour of endless Paisley Underground and identical Australian garage bands. Ah well. Nice to hear my mate Vic on there with Vibrasonic, though. I can believe it. Despite owning the first two "Nuggets" boxes, I opted not to bother with this one. One look at the tracklisting made me decide there were too many retro themepark acts (e.g the Long Ryders, the Chesterfield Kings, Unclaimed etc.) all of whom owned the right record collections but possessed little, if any, of the pinoeering spirit of their influences. As you say, Rhino could easily have compiled another (much better) box out of the bands they left out - in addition to your nominations, I'd have included Yeah Yeah Noh, Camper Van Beethoven, the Flaming Lips, the TVPs, Miracle Legion, Bobb Trimble, the Meat Puppets, the Blue Orchids, XTC, Flying Saucer Attack, the Shamen, the Pastels, even the Stone Roses - although I did notice "Sunspots" was rightfully on there. Somewhat of a wasted opportunity, methinks.

Malcolm Middleton - Waxing Gibbous. The first track is utterely brilliant, bouncy fun and jolly, is a real positive mood lifter for me right at the moment. Ludovico Einaudi - whilst studying wordless mellow stuff is good for me A load of other new stuff I've been given, but am supposed to be studying, so best get on, but newbies-ish include Roger, Adem, Adrian Crowley, James Yorkston, The National. Revisits include AC/DC - Black in Black, and of course for me the perennial Chumbawamba - recent folky stuff, yay Chumbas :-D Have fun groovers PS. This is the first time I'e done this fucking ages and ages
