No... is there one? I recently bought the first album on cd but was really disappointed with the horrible new 40th anniversary mix.

I'm not particularly anal about mixes, but I do think the mono is superior (as with virtually everything recorded prior to mid-1967 or so). Early stereo mixes were often done very quickly as an afterthought by producers and engineers with little involvement from the bands themselves. As mono record-players were still the norm at the time, more time and effort was usually spent on the mono mixes, and this is no exception. The music does sound tighter and more aggressive without unnecessarily extreme seperation. Most stereo mixes at this time adhered to a strict formula of having the rhythmn section in one channel, guitars and keyboards in the other, and vocals in the centre, without considering whether or not individual records benefitted from such treatment. There are also mono mixes of "Strange Days" and "Waiting for the Sun", but a search of the archive at my workplace only produced the stereo versions. Another album that sounds vastly - and noticeably - better in mono is the Stones "Their Satanic Majesties Request". With all the instruments piled up in the centre it sounds almost like a garage-punk album (albeit more expansive and recorded with ten times the budget that most garage- punk bands would have been allotted by btheir record labels. I think "Safe as Milk" and "the Velvet Underground & Nico" both sound better in mono as well, although the differences aren't as major as they are with "TSMR".

This all makes sense. Anyone heard the Elevators 1st Lp on mono reissue?

Thanks Popel I agree those you mentioned are better in mono , i've had the mono Safe As Milk on cd for coulple of decade's, in fact it might have been the second cd i ever bought after The Residents : God In Three Persons . Also heard that the reported mono versions of Strange Days & Waiting For The Sun are fold downs and not true mono mixes . What i havent heard as yet is whether The Doors mono vinyl in the Rhino box is the speed corrected one , hope so.

I love the new mix , its at the right speed for the first time , and no censorship on the SHE GETS HIGH lines ! It sounds so much more 1966 than the old slow version !

I've had good luck mixing certain tracks of my own to mono ... which is usually where I start, and then spread it out from there as sees fit... oddly enough it's often the further-outerer tracks that want less stereo ... or maybe that isn't odd at all

Was the other one really at the wrong speed?? To my ears the new mix is just too bright and spangly and lacks the inviting warmth and muddiness of the old one. And the "she gets high" line - wasn't the original uk mix uncensored as well? I'm a bit of a newly-converted doors fan.... .I only finally got around to listening to the albums a few months ago. Now I totally love them. Another great mono mix is Piper at the Gates, which I really prefer to the Stereo.

I think the vinyl box from Rhino is the only way to get the reissue , hope they let it out as a stand alone , or an original that i would expect to very expensive. Yes ! the mono Piper is A M A Z I N G ! ! !
